III.

Sam didn’t know what she was expecting when SG-1 came through the wormhole to Atlantis, but it wasn’t this. It wasn’t a handful of wide-eyed people dressed in rough handmade clothing, all staring at them like they’d seen a ghost.

“Hello?” Sam tried, since she didn’t recognize anyone, and she wasn’t even sure that these were their people. They certainly weren’t dressed in uniform, and that one guy in the middle of the control room, wearing a cloak- well, she was pretty sure that none of their people were blue. At least, not last time she’d checked.

“Holy crap,” Mitchell said. His eyes were fixed on the blue guy. “That’s just-“

“Welcome to Atlantis,” the blue guy said. His voice was a little rusty-sounding, but human. “You guys are about three years overdue.”

That definitely sounded like these were their people, but…

“I just heard,” a breathless, familiar voice said as someone new skidded into the control room. “Is it really-“

He stopped, and she stared up at him like she’d seen a ghost. “My God,” she said, because there was no way she’d ever forget the most annoying man she’d ever had the misfortune to encounter. “McKay?”

His eyes went very wide when he saw her. “Colonel Carter,” he said. “It’s really you.”

She found herself laughing. When Mitchell nudged her with one elbow, questioning, she said, “It’s them. It’s definitely them.”

“Come on up,” McKay called. “Sheppard will fill you in; I’m just gonna find Elizabeth. This is gonna be the best day of her life…” He disappeared down one of the hallways again, still talking to himself, while the blue guy tried a small smile. It looked odd on the roughness of his unnaturally colored skin.

“Commander John Sheppard, at your service,” he said, cocky and a little flirtatious. Sam blinked, unable to get any words out, but luckily Daniel was there to respond for her, or they’d be in trouble.

“Good to see you again, Commander,” he said, and Sheppard lifted one hand in a wave, the sleeve of his cloak falling away from his wrist, revealing that the blue seemed to be everywhere, at least what little they could see of him.
