When she was 12, all Ainsley Hayes wanted was to be the first female president of the United States. She'd tell everybody. Her parents, her grandparents, her friends' parents, even strangers. She badly wanted it and, by God, she was going to make it happen.
She involved herself in Young Republicans during her freshman year at Hillside High School, becoming secretary, then vice president, then finally president for her entire senior year. She campaigned for Student Council, winning senior class representative, and marched off to Smith College with a hearty scholarship and 18 years of solid conservative politics under her belt.
She knew it wouldn't be easy being a lonely Republican in the liberal-feminist haven of Smith, but she powered through, starting her own conservative debate club and playing the contrarian and never letting go of the goal she set for herself when she was just a girl.
She's now 42 and married to a Southern boy who swept her back to North Carolina and is running for her first reelection campaign for Congress - only a few steps left until the dream comes true.
