Last night I went to see a production of Salome in a machine shop. I was expecting Wilde's Salome, which it was not. They had decided to re-write it in a modern voice as a rather heavy-handed political allegory (as if it wasn't that already). The thing about Salome is that if you take out the religion and the orientalism and the poetic descriptions of how hot people are and how many peacocks king Herod has, there's not much left.
