I restart my swimming lessons tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to them. I have come to really enjoy swimming. I know that now I can sink a boat 50 meters from shore and be able to swim to shore. Well, more accurately I know that I can swim two lengths of the pool without stopping. I don’t think I’ll ever be a long distance open water swimmer like forensicanthgrl, but as long as I’m having fun that all that really matters.

There are a couple of things that I would like to get and probably would get if I was working full time. One of them is a bike. It would be really great to have a nice road cruising bicycle to get to work in the Westlake Corridor and back and to get the QFC at 45th and Wallingford and back home. Another would be a netbook computer. Although I’m worried that the netbook would fall into the “expensive toy” category and hardly ever get used once it was bought. After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true. But the bike I know I could / would use.

I have been mapping again. I’m working on a map of Wallingford that fits in a tactical map case. A tactical map case is a weird kind of weather proof folder that has a little slit pocket in it for a roadrunner and a compass with a clear plastic window inside the folder so you can write on the map without permanently marking it. I have two of these, one that is woodland camouflage that has my Air Force nametapes on it and a plain black one. They fit maps that are around 24cm by 18cm. When I’m done with the Wallingford map I might do more if I’m happy with it. Capitol Hill, The Westlake Corridor, The U district, Fremont, Ballard, and Downtown come to mind. If I’m really happy with the Wallingford map I’ll do a larger version. One of these days I would like to do a map of the Westlake Corridor that fits on a standard door. But it is all a lot of work. I downloaded GIMP and thought that I would give it a try because I have been using COREL draw for almost 10 years now. It works but I think newer software might produce better products in a more efficient manner. Unfortunately, I have to climb the very steep learning curve and that is anything but efficient or easy. It all takes time.

It is time to get the balcony container garden going again. I have been reading in “Urban Eden” about garden design and all of these high level concepts and everything but what I really need is a simple how to guide to grow the few things that I’m interested in. I’m thinking about growing lots of a few things. Strawberries, Kale, Potatoes, Basil, and some other herbs are what I have in mind. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on the garden. After all, the driving force is to save on groceries. Last summer I learned that I really liked gardening because it does save a lot of money and it is good to eat food that you produced locally, organically, and by yourself. It can be work but it is not as much work as you would think. It can be really simple if you let it.

There have been other things going on but I don’t want to write about them now. This entry is already long enough. If I write about everything in one entry then there will be nothing left for tomorrow.
