I finally picked up a copy of this CD and listened to it all the way through - it is much more chill and low-key than I had anticipated. It sounds something like what would be performed in a futuristic lounge bar. There's a neat insert in the front with the story of Janelle Monae and the album, which has to do with her being ABDUCTED INTO THE FUTURE and cloned into a line of androids. It is amazing.
"Cold War" and "Tightrope" fit in seamlessly, not defining the album but enhancing it.
This album works very well as a whole, and I like it very, very much. Multiple tracks are standouts and would do nicely on their own, but the effect of listening to the whole thing is magical, transporting. Very much recommended.
