Eureka 7: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers: Essentially I can sum this up with a big 'wuuuuut.' I mean, I know an AU when I see one, but dang, that made like, no sense. It made even less sense than the series, and the series was pretty confusing (yeah, I went there). Also, I don't even like Eureka that much, but the movie took away most everything she did have going for her, like cold-blooded murder while piloting a giant living electric surfboard-riding gundam of death, or caring for people while essentially being a blank slate. And the reasoning for the Gekko's crew's actions at the end was annoying. Andrew and I discussed how the movie might tie into the series - actual alternate universes as provided within the series canon were proposed - though he was disappointed by the movie on the whole. I, being a veteran of anime movies, was less surprised.
Zombieland: This, on the other hand, rocked my face off. It is amazing, hilarious while still having a cast of very likable characters. Nerdy hero that isn't a skeeze! Smart chicks that aren't instabitchy! Tallahassee! Massive subversion of tropes! Also, twinkie. Go see this right now.
The previews beforehand didn't hold much of interest, though the Twilight one made me feel as though I would never be cleansed (the movie made up for it, and the people behind us the first time were all AWW NO GAG BARF which was satisfying). More interesting was some of the programming that was playing before the official previews the second time I went. I had heard rumors of the V remake for some time, which seemed both heretical and inexplicable (just go watch the freaking miniseries! it's a little dated, but it's not that old! and come on, his pants are painted on!), but I didn't pay it much heed.
One must understand that V is A Thing in my family. We love it. My brother was terrified of it for a long time when he was little, but grew to love it as well. I went to some lengths to acquire DVDs of it as a gift for mom after our VCR died. So, when I saw that Morena Baccarin is to be in it, in the role she is to be in, I was torn. I called mom later.
A: So Morena Baccarin - you know, Inara from Firefly - is going to be in the V remake.
M: The what.
A: The V remake. I know.
M: That's a travesty.
M: ...
M: But fuck, she's so hot.
A: I know. And she's going to be playing the head lizard lady.
M: Aw fuck! Now I have to watch it! She's gonna be so hot!
A: I know, right?
Yeah.
Be Kind Rewind: Andrew and I watched this the other day, and I was pleasantly surprised by it. (We frequently have very different tastes in humor.) It's about a VHS rental store that's in danger of going out of business. One of the main characters gets magnetized in a freak electric mishap and erases all of the tapes, so he and the other main character set to refilming all of the movies on their own. I liked that the woman they get to help them wasn't reduced to a love interest (and indeed that is not touched on much), and it had some interesting racial things going on (like the black characters going '...no.' at the white dude who comes in with blackface. honestly that makes sense in context), though it's not perfect in that regard.
