Seriously?

I have decided that I'm really sick of concert venues and bars in the Cleveland area likening the recently enacted smoking ban to Soviet Communism and/or 1984's "Big Brother".

[For those of you not here, there were a few posters in a venue this weekend that said "Big Brother says No Smoking. If you witness violations, contact the Anti-Sex League". And if you haven't read 1984, Big Brother and the Anti-Sex League are both parts of that book about an incredibly oppressed society in "the future"]

I will admit that I don't smoke. So, maybe I just don't get it, or something.

Maybe people think that smokers are going to stay home instead of going out, but, I have a feeling they like to go out and drink enough that they'll deal with it. Not to mention that I'm soooo much more likely to spend time in one of these places because people aren't driving me to coughing fits and tears by being in them for more than few minutes at a time. And I think there are quite a few other people who feel the same way.

So, waaaaah, you have to walk 5 feet to smoke and sometimes it's cold out. And in return for your moments of effort you get to stop poisoning me.

And this is somehow the same as the government watching you every second of every day, rationing food such that everyone is usually still going hungry, and you living in constant fear of hideous torture until you're completely brainwashed or dead?

Sorry, but no, and while I appreciate your literary reference, it's bullshit.

I will continue to let you get away with breaking the ban, Mr. Smoking-and-peeing-with-the-door-open-in-the-ladies'-room-at-the-Grog-Shop, but I will not accept this ridiculous idea that you smokers are now martyrs for a cause that's dying to a Communist takeover.
