Woah! I totally neglected to post about this.
On New Year's Day, Dad, Steph and I headed over to Cinemark to see Hansel and Gretel as performed by the Metropolitan Opera.
Gretel was played by Christine Schäfer and Hansel was played by Alice Coote, a woman famous for her "pants parts." Pants parts are male roles written for women performers. When I first saw images for this show, I wasn't certain if Alice was a woman or an unfortunately named man. I'm not sure how old these ladies are but they are a far cry from the 10 year olds they were portraying. ^^;
This production was in English. While that's a nice touch, I found myself struggling to parse the english instead of just enjoying the music and using the subtitles. Next time I'll remember not to work so hard.
As for the production itself, boy was it trippy! All the sets were oversized and at these weird angles to exaggerate everything which was quite cool. My favorite bit was when they were lost in the "forest." The trees were people wearing suits with these impressive tree branch things that covered their heads.
Again this was a good production, but I much preferred Romeo and Juliet.
