On love, loss, and tight clothes

Yesterday, I did a lot of driving around looking for a great deal post-Christmas deal on a pair of pants. I didn't find pants that worked for me, though I did find a Linens and Things which was going out of business and selling stuff at a 80% discount. I grabbed a couple of sheets and a decent looking landscape which fits a blank spot in my kitchen perfectly.

During the course of the driving, I noticed that when I removed my foot from the pedals Werner didn't move forward like he--and all properly functioning cars--usually does. I also noticed that he was very sluggish, like he was dragging an anchor. I also saw when I got out, that the back left brake drum was glowing bright red and emitting a good deal of heat and a foul smell.

I have a guy who I trust for repairs and who gives great deals, but he's semi-retired and doesn't work weekends. I needed the burning, smelly issue fixed ASAP* and I was due for an oil change, so I rolled into Midas at 7:30 this morning. I was there until about noon. Fortunately, I came prepared. I put a good dent in Pokémon Pearl (I never thought I would say this, but my Psyduck is kicking ass), a good dent in The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat (great book. People can have some amazingly odd things happen to them. I almost want to go through life wearing a crash helmet now.), and a very large dent in my wallet.

The problem was, as I suspected, love. One part of my back left brake, after years of being tantalized with mere occasional touches with the another part gave in to its limerence and refused to let go. I know how it feels. That's why restraining orders were invented (fortunately, restraining orders don't cover bad serenades over the internet, right msmcknittington? Well, part 1 got its wish and it will live happily ever after attached to part 2 in the scrap heap. That is until those scraps are melted down in reused somewhere. I suppose they will live happily ever after, just in a different form and with a bunch of other scraps mixed in. Did I just write a polyamorous fable?

I wound up paying a lot more than I really expected to and I was a bit down because of it. I had squirreled away some money to take someone to see a show this week, but I had to spend it. Rather than calling friends and being social, I retreated into my apartment to lick my wounds all day. I got some good cleaning done and got caught up on some TV. I am almost up to speed with 30 Rock (insane Jennifer Aniston is disturbingly hot. This is me missing the point of the episode.) and I watched the latest new episode of Pushing Daisies. I kinda hope that that was the last episode, but I'm sure it isn't. It wasn't the best episode, but it ended at a great point. There was a big loose end dangling and a few small ones, but there are going to be no matter what considering the way ABC ended the show.

I also got around to watching my Netflix'd Disc One of Season One of Veronica Mars. I came in for the third season and I was pretty much up to speed, but actually watching the episodes I missed adds all new layers to the characters and why they acted the way they did towards each other in the third season.

I was a little worried that VM might not age well considering the amount of pop culture references they make. For example, Paris Hilton makes an appearance as a catty rich brat in the second episode. Maybe it's because 2004 wasn't that long ago, but the show didn't seem dated at all to me. It's the sort of thing I could watch over and over and over again.

ETA: I took matters into my own hands.*

*That's begging to be taken out of context.
