Lj idol: food memory

The interview takes place in an office. The office is sparsely furnished. The teenager reluctantly seats herself in the only chair facing the desk at which an official looking woman regards her curiously. After an eternity of silence, the woman finally speaks:

“So can you tell me why we are here today?”

“Because I guess… I guess I remembered something. It was totally weird.”

“That is what your father tells me. Can you tell me about it?”

“I don’t know. It just hit me. All of a sudden, I could remember… But it doesn’t make sense.”

“Can you tell me where you were before you remembered? Maybe it will help me shed some light on your situation.”

“Sure. I don’t know how it will help though. I was on a date. It was a totally horrendous date anyway. My friend dared me to go out with this complete loser, but he’s super loaded , so whatever…”

“Please proceed with the actual story.”

“Well, he took me to this restaurant. It was totally epic. I’ve never seen so many courses. It was like, amazing. Apparently, he eats at places like this all the time.”

“At what time during the meal did this memory occur?”

“Hmmmm. I think it was when those fancy waiters brought out the dessert. I smelled it, such a rich, warm, fabulous smell. And then…”

“What happened?”

“It just… hit me.”

“And what was that?”

“It was like, a vision or a picture or something. I don’t know.”

“Concentrate.”

“I am. It’s hard, but I’m not sure why.”

“Take a moment. Keep concentrating. You’re safe here.”

There was a moment of silence while she concentrated. And then…

“I remember… I remember… a red coat. It hung in the kitchen. I know it was the kitchen because I recognize the room in my memory. I could see the table and the oven and the window.”

“Where was the coat hung?”

“On a chair, I think. And there was a woman with her back turned away from me. She was at the kitchen window.”

“Do you recall what she was doing?”

”It was like she was almost pushing herself out the window. I could barely see her. All I could really see was that coat.”

“Back to the meal you were having before this memory. What were you having for dessert?”

“Um… It was this fancy dish called Tiramisu. At least I think that’s what it was called.”

“Have you ever eaten it before?”

“No. I don’t think so. I just know I’ve smelled it, somewhere.”

“Do you have any idea who that woman in your memory might be?”

“No. That’s the frustrating part. Seriously, I swear, I don’t know, but then… I think I might. It’s so confusing.”

“I am sure you knew her at one point in your life. She is your mother, and she has been missing for 14 years. Your recent flash back means that we can reopen the investigation into her disappearance.”
