April 2010 - Summary

May 07, 2010 13:18

now that I relaxed from yesterday's ordeal (not), I finally got around to do the April's list.

Movies:
1. The Flock - I stumbled upon this film by accident, this is what IMDB has to say about it:
"This film is about a hyper-vigilant employee of the department of public safety who, while training his young female replacement, has to track down a missing girl who he is convinced is connected to a paroled sex offender he is investigating"
I didn't get it.

2. Touch the sound - a documentary about Evelyn Glennie, a percussionist who is deaf (or almost deaf, I'm not sure). I have been wanting to watch it for a long time now. It was very beaufitully shot, and the sound design was excellent. But I felt that there was no line to the story... and a good documentary needs one.

3. View From the top - It's just a silly little film...

4. Hey Hey, It's Esther Blueberger - An Australian film about a 12 year old Jewish girl, "inventing" a new personallity in a new school (a school she isn't really registered in). It's a nice little comedy/drama and a nice coming of age story.

5. Suburban Girl - I don't know seeing Sarah Michelle Geller and Alec Baldwin together was just odd.

6. Ca$h - despite the name, this is a French film. It's about con artists which usually makes for a nice story. Tries to be "Nueve reinas" (nine queens) but ends up more like being somewhere between Ocean's 11 and 13 (nice idea, some nice execution, some really stupid story lines).

7. The Invisible - the description of the movie on my TV was: "Annie hasn't been noticed since her Mom died. Nick's body is in a ditch and no one can see his ghost. The two find out something... blah blah blah..."
the description on IMDB is much more accurate: "After an attack leaves him in limbo -- invisible to the living and also near death -- a teenager discovers the only person who might be able help him is his attacker".
It's an odd film and I didn't quite like it, mostly I believe it's because neither of the characters was developed enough.

8. Saved (re-watch) - awesome film!
9. Bon Voyage - Another French film. This is the IMDB description: "An actress, a writer, a student, and a government worker band together in an effort to escape Paris as the Nazis move into the city" - yes, there is an actress, a writer, a student and a government worker. there is even a spy. yes, there are Nazis, yes the leave Paris. but this really is not what the film is about. It was supposed to be a comedy, but it wasn't funny. And all in all quite annoying.

10. The Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford - Another film I found annoying.

11. Across The Universe - I love the Beatles, but this was just wrong. Too many Beatles songs, no story what so ever.

12. Duplicity - It was an OK film, fine to pass the time. But probably better for an afternoon where I have nothing to do rather than stay up to watch it.

13. Cleaner - the same as the previous one. (but I didn't stay up to watch this....)

Music:
1. The John Butler Trio - April Uprising
2. Eels - End Times
3. The XX
4. Midlake - The Courage Of Others
5. Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
6. Johhny Cash - American Man VI - Ain't No Grave
7. An instrumental album by an Israeli guitar player - excellent!

I don't feel like writing anything about these, I bought them because I like them.

Books
1. The Girl Who kicked the hornets' nest - Steig Larsson - Longer and a little more complicated and less suspensfull than the previous two, but still written excellently.
2. When You Are Engulfed in Flames - David Sedaris - I haven't actually finished this book. So far it was OK, but it didn't grip me. Normally, I would have finished it, but it was in my car yesterday... so now the thief has it.

I also re-read an excellent Israeli mystery book.
