I finally finished today my first book for 2008. It took me almost 2 months, mostly because of work (and fan fiction).
So finally the list that started it all:
January:
1. Lynne Truss - Talk To The Hand (a few weeks) - didn't like it as much as Eat, Shoots & leaves.
1.5. Ian McEwan - Atonement - Hebrew Translation - after 8 days and about 3 chapters I let it go
2. Alexander McCall Smith - The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency - I saw this book many times in the store, and was never inclined to buy it, then I got it for my birthday.... I'm still not inclined to buy it. (1 day)
3. Carlos Ruiz Zafon - La Sombra Del Viento (Shadow of the wind)- Hebrew Translation - BEST BOOK!!!(1 day)
4. David Baldacci - The Collectors - Reminded me why I like him so much (2 days)
February:
5. Rita Mea Brown - Venus Envy - re-read - This book for some reason always reminds me of "it's in the water" and Bette Porter (1 day)
6. June Casagrande - Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies - Because English grammer is easier than Hebrew one, and I can't seem to find a fun Hebrew one. (2.5 days)
7. Marcie Walsh with Michael Malone - The Killing Club - I have to start by saying this book is very good. I'm starting like that, because Marcie Walsh is not a real person. It's a character on a day time soap (I forgot which), and this it the book she "wrote" on the show. I'm sure that if I had noticed this when I saw the book online, I would not have bought it (good thing i didn't).(0.5 Day)
8. Cyanide Wells - Marcia Muller (1 Days)
9. Adrian McKinty - Hidden River - I finished it, but it drained me, meaning it was not really good. (5 days)
10. Alison Bechdel - Fun Home - Fun home indeed, I was however a little disappointed by the narrative(3 days)
11. Alafair Burke - Close Case - Wonderful book, and Alafair Burke is one of my new favorite writers(3 days)
March:
12. Elmore Leonard - Get Shorty (~11 days)
13. Dorit Peleg - The Face of The place - Hebrew book - I gave it the name... I'm not sure how to translate this. It's a book about a seperated/divorced woman with a son in Tel-Aviv. Who meets God one day at the bus stop. It was't easy to read, and I'll probably have to read it again one day to fully understand/enjoy it. (8.5 Days)
14. William Boyd - Restless (1.5 Days)
15. Nicole Krauss - The History Of Love - hebrew traslation - Another great book, one day I'll buy it English (5 Days)
16. Robert Wilson - The Vanished Hands - Another author I love, but my other two books of his were better. (2 Days)
April:
17. Brave New World - Adlous Huxley - I read half of this book back in March 2006 and finished it in the beginning of April.
18. My One-night Stand with Cancer - Tania Katan (10 Days)
19. The Flip Side Of Desire - Lynn Ames - Me Love Tennis. Me love Lesbians. nuf said (1 Day)
20. Accidental Love - BL Miller - I hate saying bad things, but this book mostly felt like it hadn't really left the world of Uber Xena behind. (1 Day)
May:
21. Sharon Bowers - Lucifer Rising (1 Day)
June:
22. Stephen Fry - Making History
21. Neil Gaiman - Neverwhere - re-read - One of my all time favorites.
22. Laurie R. King - Grave Talent - re-read
23. Neil Gaiman - Anansi Boys
24. Simcha Sinan - Arak Zachlawi - Hebrew Book - A nice little book about a father who goes to save his kidnapped son from Lebanon - maybe our governemnt can learn something from that. (2 Days)
25. Guillermo Martinez - Crimenes imperceptibles - Hebrew Translation (from Spanish) (1Day)
26. Andrej Kurkov - The Death and The Penguin - BRILLIANT (1 Day)
July:
27. The Flip Side Of Desire - Lynn Ames - I know I just read it in April, but like I said - Tennis & Lesbians (1 Day)
28. Karel Glastra van Loon - de passievrucht (the passionfruit) - Hebrew translation (from Dutch) (1 Day)
29. Qiu Xiaolong - Death of red heroine - Hebrew Translation (4 Days)
30. Nicola Griffith - The Blue Place (4 Days)
31. Orit Harel - French Kiss - Hebrew book - I read this while my mother's with the cable technician. This book was in the garbage box that my mother still moved with her... (1 Day)
32. "Small" Talk - I'm putting "" around the Small, because it's not actually the English word small, but the Hebrew word that's pronounced small - which means "Left" - its name is a pun. It's a book about lefties, which I am part of.
33. Ofir Touche Gafla - End's World - Hebrew book - You either love this book or you hate it. I loved it. It's about the world after.
34. Philip Roth - The Plot Against America (1 Day)
August:
35. Lee Child - One Shot (1 Day)
36. Lee Child - Without Fail - Hebrew Translation- re-read - reading the previous book reminded me that I liked this one. (1.5 Days)
37. J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (3 Days)
38. Nicola Griffith - Stay (2 Days)
39. Alafair Burke - Dead Connection (2 Days)
40. Aviva Avron - I wanted to kiss you in the daisies field - Hebrew book - It's probably the only lesbian book I have in hebrew (it's also not really good) - it's also probably the first one I bought.
September:
41. Karin Slaughter - Beyond Reach - It usually takes me 2-3 days to read Karin Slaughter, but due to lot of time on buses (I can't read while on the bus) in the month of September it took me longer. What a book. What an ending. I'm looking forward to the next one.(12 Days)
42. Yossi Avni Levi - A Man Without A Shadow - Hebrew book - this book was recommended to me by the salesman as "The best new book" - it's not. (1 Day)
43. Sandra Scoppettone - This Dame For Hire - The ending was quite predictable but it's written so well, and the language is wonderful, so you forget. (4 Days)
November:
44. Sandra Scoppettone - Gonna take a homicidal journey (5 Days)
December:
45. Sandra Scoppettone - Too Darn Hot (4 Days)
As you can see, I got sucked into work, and with that and moving, in the two months of 2008 only managed to read one book (but buy a bunch of them)
I also read Jim Butcher's Dresden Files book 1-6 in April and the rest in May, but since I read them as e-books, and didn't pay for them I'm not counting them in.
I also listened to Elizabeth George's A Great Dilliverance & Paid In Blood in April.
Before the month of August (when I started working again), whenever there were "gaps" in book reading, I read almost every Original story on Academy of bards and the fan fiction here and P&P, so my days were full, too bad I can't put all the stories I read on this list.
Best Book: hands down Shadow of the wind. Coming in second: History of Love and The Death and The Penguin
Worst Book: I want to say Atonement, but since I never finished it, I'll go with Hidden River and The Passionfruit.
Best Surprise (as in: I wasn't expecting this to be good): The Killing Club
Best Ending: Beyond Reach
Coming up in 2008:
Right now I have 38 books on my to read list. These are the books that I actually have (there is also a bunch of books that I want to read and I know other people who can lend them to me).Not all of them are fiction. 3 of which I'm in the middle of, and some I have for at least 2 years (I think I just found a book that has been at my bedside for almost 3 years and is not even on the list...hmmm....). I have to decided which book is next, and it's a difficult one.
