Had a craving for old Billy Bragg songs the other day and bought The Essential Billy Bragg yesterday. The first disc is just unadulterated loveliness. "I am the milkman of human kindness and I will leave an extra pint". Deathless, pure, heartbreaking funny tales about people. "She ran away from home in her mother's best coat, she was married before she was even entitled to vote...It's you and me against the world, kid, she mumbled to herself". The second disc, more recent, is a bit excrutiating as Essex Boy decided to take on a weird American accent.
But oh Billy, oh Billy, you really are the Bard of Barking.
