Friday night, Game 4 - Stars 4, Avs 1. Could've gone better, but I had fun watching with Ky. At least she introduced me to Smirnoff's Black Cherry ice (which is kinda like Zima, yet not as lame). It's like drinking an alcoholic Dr. Brown's Black Cherry soda. After the game, Ben, Ky, Jason Smith and I all watched the latest episode of Dr. Who, which was brilliant as usual.
Saturday Ben and I got up, ran DeeDee-related errands before meeting up with Rick and Tim to help with the moving crew. There were a lot of people helping out and I daresay everything went pretty smoothly. The beer-drinking afterward was a nice touch - we got people to go to Pineapple Hill, the nicest bar closest to the house and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The non-smoking aspect of it was much appreciated. I believe if one wants to smoke, one must stand well clear of the door whilst smoking.
Sunday I blazed through the prior night's hockey games and was surprised at the Edmonton win over Detroit. They really have taken it to the Wings thus far - they have skated with them and gotten the big goals from the right people at the right time. I was a bit bummed to see the Bolts done so soon, but their goaltending situation has been the thorn in their side all year long. Then came Game 5. I didn't think the Avs would close out the series with this game - hell, NO ONE thought they were even going to advance. Every analyst I've seen/read picked the Stars to win this series - every. single. one. Ferraro picked the Avs to win it in OT, though, once they were done with regulation. I think Olczyck was the one who said Theodore would have to steal a game for Colorado to go on, and this was the game. I didn't realize it as it was happening, but he absolutely kept the Avs in this game, stopping 50 shots, 11 coming in the OT period. I love the goals that were scored - Dowd got one that never should have gone in, Sakic scoring with .4 left on the clock... Joe also set up the play that led to Brunette scoring the GWG - and finally, finally, finally this team knows to start chipping pucks up into the net when the goaltender is down.
The Stars did rally. I think Turco was the weak link - he's just not a proven playoff performer yet. It's possible he'll get there - he was incredible during game 4, where his athletic ability shined and he robbed the Avs of several golden opportunies to score. His challenge is to sustain that level of play through an entire playoff series.
So, the Avs wait to see if they play Calgary or Detroit. If the Oil win one more game, uh-oh. The Flames can close out the Ducks tonight... and I'm still tempted to say I'd rather have the Avs face Calgary, based on the regular season series... but yeah. More homework to be done first.
