Stay busy over the summer!

Sophia St. Clair will be offering beginning sewing and pattern drafting classes this summer in her home. Classes will be twice a week and will cover two types of sewing: Basic Fashion Design and Modification and Costuming for the Theater. Both classes are for beginners. No experience is necessary. Ms. Caramagno also has sewing machines and other necessary sewing tools but there are only 4 places in each class. Classes are $10. Scholarships are available. Please inquire if you would like to apply for the St. Clair Crafters Scholarship. Students are responsible for purchasing materials like cloth, patterns, buttons and thread. A list of needed items will be given out before each class.

Basic Fashion Design and Modification:

Learn to tailor clothes to fit you perfectly. Learn how to use old clothes to create new and original fashion designs. Master basic pattern drafting, pattern modification, and basic sewing techniques like hemming, finishing, zippers, button holes, gathering and pleats.

Costuming for the Theater:

Learn the shapes and silhouettes for costumes from a variety of historical eras from the Middle Ages to the 1940’s. Learn how to draft or modify patterns to create these costumes and how to size and fit costumes to actors. Learn how to choose fabrics and notions and master basic sewing techniques like hemming, finishing, zippers, button holes, gathering and pleats.

Classes for June:    Classes will be held in central San Jose, CA

Basic Fashion Design and Modification:

Classes held Mondays 11am - 3pm

June 7th- Fitting Shirts, skirts and trousers- Skill Focus: Straight stitch, hemming and darts

June 14th- Using a Sewing Pattern- Shirts Part 1- Skill Focus: Using a sewing pattern, cutting and marking cloth, finishing seams.

June 21st- Using a Sewing Pattern- Shirts Part 2- Skill Focus: Shirt construction, buttons and button holes, interfacing and pockets.

June 28th- TBA

Costuming for the Theater:

Classes held Thursdays 5pm - 9pm

June 10th- The Middle Ages- drafting and constructing tunics and shifts. Skill Focus: Straight stitch, hemming.

June 17th- The Middle Ages- drafting and constructing trousers, bloomers, and pantaloons. Skill Focus: Gathers, pleats and elastic.

June 24th- The Middle Ages- drafting and constructing peasant shirts and skirts. Skill Focus: Cuffs, interfacing and button holes.

July 1- TBA
