Springfling reveal! "I am become..." (Dean, Death - Gen)
Now that spnspringfling reveals are up, I can 'fess up to which piece I did: 'I am become..." for boysinperil, using the prompts "Dean & Death (gen)" and "consequences."
I noodled around for a good long while and finally came up with an idea that gave me an excuse to play more with MangaStudio 5.
I've always been intrigued by the idea of Dean eventually taking over for Death, and it came to mind that it could be one (horrible) way of dealing with the Mark. I spent a lot of time noodling over how to tell this story in three comic panels (and a lot of time doodling potential layouts in the margins of meeting notes at work) and how to imply everything that came before the offer and Dean's resigned acceptance of it.
Then came the actual drawing, which was a challenge as a) I had spent nearly all my allotted time playing with words and layout and b) it was my first time working entirely digitally. I'm not sure I like working with a tablet for the actual drawing of things and I'm still figuring out everything MS5 can actually do (and I really need to find some more fonts). I can easily see myself doing a lot more that's hybrid traditional/digital.
The title is an allusion to "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds," the line Oppenheimer (mis?)quoted from the Bhagavad Gita upon realizing the enormity of what he'd done in helping create the first atomic bomb. It felt more than fitting given the plot of the comic and the whole idea of terrible, terrible consequences.
