o-o-o-o-o

Sooyoung sat on the floor of the rehearsal room with no one to keep her company except for the small red and green striped pouch sitting between her long parted legs. A part of her wondered just how in the world did Heechul come up with his oh so brilliant idea but a bigger part of her would rather keep out of how Heenim’s mind worked. Nonetheless, he came up with the idea of an exchange gift with a twist that wouldn’t cost that much and would allow everyone to give a person a gift. His idea? To pick lines from a song to be dedicated to *insert his or her name here*, write it on a piece of paper and drop it inside the properly labelled pouch.

The brunette could only glare at the pouch labelled with her name, wondering just what lines were inside it. Letting a deep sigh out of her lips, she took the small bag in her hands and opened it, spilling the small pieces of paper on the floor. If relationships got fucked up because of this, Heechul was all to blame. Picking a random piece of paper up, a smile instantly lit her face as she read its contents. It was from Jessica.

We were strangers starting out on a journey.

She could feel tears brimming her eyes now, remembering those difficult training years. She and Jessica had learned to depend on each other throughout that time especially during the times the older woman felt like such a stranger and outsider in her own native land. They had quickly become best friends even though not so long ago before that, they practically didn’t know each other. Tucking the first piece of paper back into the pouch, she picked another one. It was from Donghae.

In good times, in bad times I’ll be on your side forevermore. That’s what friends are for.

“Thank you, oppa.”

She pouted in thought, trying to remember what she had placed on the paper for him, letting out a giggle when she remembered that she had wrote down I’ll be your Tinkerbelle in the sky. It was very appropriate since Donghae was a lot like Peter Pan at times and in certain ways. Another giggle escaped her lips as she set aside Donghae’s paper, moving on to the rest.

Sooyoung definitely had to thank Heechul for this idea. She enjoyed reading each and every piece of paper that she had. Some of the lyrics made her laugh like the ones from Eunhyuk and Amber; the male of the two wrote two simple words but it meant a lot to her.

Keep smiling.

It was from the same song Donghae got his line from and she wouldn’t be surprised that they were listening to the same song when they were writing their messages at the same time. Those two best friends really just did work that way. Some lyrics made her teary-eyed like Seohyun’s. Sungmin’s in particular successful made her cry as he quote from Mariah Carey’s famous song.

Thank God I found you. I’m lost, lost without you.

Just like Jessica, she had written the exact same thing to her pink-loving best friend. Never in her life before she had gotten close to him did she expect that she would consider someone from the opposite sex to be her rock. As it turned out, Sungmin even understood her more than she did herself at times. He really was heaven-sent.

Soon, there were only three pieces of paper left and she knew exactly who they were from since they were the only ones she hadn’t read from - Jaejoong, Siwon and Heechul. Boy, this was going to be very interesting… since two of those men had such special places in her heart that she often got confused. Who was just really a special friend and who was the one she was ready to give her heart to? Picking up the piece of paper that had Siwon’s name on, she was honestly scared to read what was inside but she knew she had to.

Something’s telling me it might be you.

Her jaw dropped; her mind drifting to what she wrote for him.

How will I know if I let you go?

With shaking hands, she reached for Jaejoong’s paper. She didn’t know if what she and Siwon had written for each other was just pure coincidence. She had been ready with a list of reasons to defend why she had chosen that line for Siwon but now that she knew what he wrote for her, it was a completely different story and she knew that she unconsciously brought his hopes up. She could only hope that the case wouldn’t be too bad with Jaejoong, praying to the heavens as she opened his paper.

I’m looking at you and my heart loves the view.

Fun-fucking-tastic.

Sooyoung dropped the pieces of paper, burying her face in her hands soon after. She knew full well what she had written to him.

Every waking day, you take my breath away.

Oh no.

She heard the door open soon after, not giving her the chance to think of a list of reasons why she had chosen that line from Emma Bunton’s song for Jaejoong. Sooyoung lifted her face from her hands, finding Siwon standing by the door with a happy yet unsure expression on his face. Her eyes fell to his clenched hand and saw a piece of paper sticking out of it, knowing full well it was hers.

“Oppa…”

Siwon barely got a sound out of his mouth when the door opened once more and soon, Jaejoong had joined them in the room. He had a similar expression on his face as his gaze settled on her but it soon turned to a confused one when he realized that Siwon was standing by his side.

“Hyung…?” The younger man trailed off, uncertainty tainting his tone as his expression mirrored the DBSK member’s.

Jaejoong took in a sharp breath, turning his attention back to Sooyoung. He held the piece of paper in his hand tighter as if he was scared that it’d disappear. “Soo…”

Sooyoung could only hope and pray that the ground would open up and swallow her whole. She couldn’t believe that this was happening to her. Sending Heechul to the fiery pits of Hades as she picked the paper from him and got on her feet, she could barely look at the two men straight in the eye. Offering the two a very tentative smile, she took the time to read her last piece of paper.

I’ve been waiting to give this gift tonight.

The 98 Degrees song was followed by words that were undoubtedly Heechul’s personal message to her.

Here’s your chance, Soo, if I played my cards right and the heavens answered my prayers. Follow your heart.

Glancing up at Jaejoong and Siwon, Sooyoung shut her eyes.

That was easier said than done.
