I'm not too serious about learning it (just for fun), but if I end up liking it or getting good at it, I'll likely get a nicer/better violin (or refurb an antique one). For now this is fine. I will need to make a few small tweaks however. The strings are too far off the fingerboard at the nut, and the G string on the bridge stands a bit too high. Not a big deal to fix this (especially since everything is new and I didn't want to make the grooves too deep).
I understand the benefits of an in-person tutor, but I really can't afford 40$/lesson. It's not THAT expensive, but I'm really broke at the moment. The particular lady that I'm following online seems excellent, and she's a violin and piano teacher herself. "The Online Piano and Violin Tutor" is her channel name. She shows everything very clearly. Bow hold, how to rosin (and how often), how to clean the violin, posture, position, hints and tricks, etc.
I'm used to tuning my dulcimer by ear, so for now I'm willing to deal with the inconvenience of not having a tuner. It's been on my "to buy" list for a while, but even just 20$ is a bit too much to spend right now. I'll have to wait a bit.
