Road trip: Lake Arrowhead sets the scene for House's November sweeps episode. "We go to a resort [for a] conference," says Robert Sean Leonard. "Wilson goes up there with a very clear idea of what he wants to say. He's giving a lecture and he wants to talk about something that House thinks will end his career. It's actually more serious."

House | As one might surmise, tonight’s episode, directed by Hugh Laurie, marks the beginning of the very end for House, as the titular doc and his BFF Wilson take an impromptu vacation together in the wake of the latter’s cancer diagnosis. “The very end of [last week's episode], through the one I [directed] and really up until the finale, is sort of one journey… and I hope, if we’ve done it right, a fairly tense one,” says Laurie. Both Laurie and scene partner Robert Sean Leonard agree that it’s fitting that their alter egos peel away in this episode, as the series nears its end. “[They] are the only two characters on the show who decide to be together,” Leonard points out. “House works for Cuddy, and the team works for House…. They all have no choice; they have to be together. But House and Wilson actually voluntarily spend time with one another, which is unique to their relationship in this group of people.”

Dr. James Wilson - House -
Wilson has long been the viewer’s point of reason, our anchor to keeping things in check. Honestly it’s a formulaic technique, and while Robert Sean Leonard is well suited for the role I always found Dr. Wilson a bit too obvious. Then 2008 hit, and Wilson’s friendship with House was challenged by something a little more serious than the moral ambiguity of Dr. Pill Pop. Starting with last season’s finale, “Wilson’s Heart,” we saw the incredible turmoil that House’s actions had on Wilson. Even better is that Wilson didn’t roll over and act exasperated, instead he stood up and walked away. The death of Amber was Wilson’s most emotional moment in the history of the show, and his walking away from House was his strongest. -Steve West
