Simple fact of life #48420812477:
No matter what show the musical theatre department puts out, they can still charge more than drama shows and fill darn near every seat in the house, consistently. The biggest night a drama or comedy brings in the Rupel is about 400 out the 600 some seats in the place. This is neither here nor there, and anything I could do won't change the fact. I do find it a little depressing. Knowing that no matter how compelling a dramatic or comedic performance I can ever give, complete with complex plot, character development, brilliant directorial choices, and amazing design--more people will shell out more dollars to watch people sing and dance, no plot, little plot, or plot. I have nothing against musical theatre. I love the people involved and I applaud their talents. I was very impressed with many of the cast members, especially someone from my Shakespeare class. I just think it's a sad sight when the general public doesn't care for a story as much as they care to hear a catchy tune, see flashy costumes and half bare bottoms, and watch complicated dance steps.
