So it looks like I won't be going back to Oklahoma until August 15th or so. Somewhere around there. Moving in is turning out to be more complicated than expected, I don't feel like hanging out in Norman or throwing myself on the mercy of a friend for two weeks, and, well, it looks like the backpacking trip might not have been in the works anyway. So! I get three more weeks here, which honestly is fine by me. I do miss Oklahoma, and the people in Oklahoma, and I am more than ready to get back to some full-time learning; but there is still plenty to do here! People to see, places to go, Norse myths to reread, sushi to eat, cello lessons to teach, relaxing to do. I'm pleased!

Today I saw Ruya, one of the last remaining GHP-friends I still see, and we went out for the best Korean food I have ever had (MUSHROOM DULSOT BIBIMBAP, UNF), and then for delicious sweet-potato pastries at the Korean cafe next door, and caught up, and it was so fun! Ruya remains one of the most interesting people I know. She's this quiet and crafty kind of shy; the first impression is that she's timid, but no, she just chooses very carefully what you get to know about her. And somehow it's flattering that she stays in touch with a flake like me; someone as clever as Ruya thinking you are worth hanging out with, three years after the fact, is a good feeling. Also she remains adorable and hilarious and fascinating and way too smart for me, and I am planning to hit the Harry Potter premiere in the ATL with her!

It's honestly nice being out of work, being out of school, having nothing to do but nothing. I couldn't live like this all the time, because I'm insane, but I think I need this every so often. It's been weeks since I woke up anxious or had trouble falling asleep (since I stopped work, actually). Now it's time for good books, great friends, bad movies, and blissful sleep, and I am so okay with that continuing a few more weeks.

Ending this post with a recommendation! Because I'm really seriously going to app Thor to Mayfield, I've been brushing up on my myths; got my online Eddas and all the Norseshit the public library had to offer (STILL WAITING ON THE VIKING COOKBOOK, ALAS).

If you have any interest at all in reading the Norse myths and are looking for a starting point that is less confusing than the Eddas, I recommend Kevin Crossley-Holland's The Norse Myths. It's laid out more or less chronologically (no mean feat with this canon); it takes inspiration not only from Snorri Sturluson's work, but from other works accepted as Norse canon; it's hella well-researched, and I love his prose. He uses words with Germanic roots as much as possible and in places paraphrases the translated Eddas quite closely. The myths are engaging, the dialogue is fun and not at all out-of-place, and the introduction explains some really fascinating background. I read this one earlier in the year in Oklahoma, and I like it even more having read the actual Eddas.

...Yeah, this app hasn't been started, I'm having too much damn fun doing the research. OOPS.
