I've debated posting this question for fear of offending people, but I really sincerely want to know, and I think some of you might be able to answer this, so

He's remarkably eloquent. In the '04 elections - he kind of had his debutante party at the Democratic National Convention that year - he stood out as a voice of reason and sanity. Contrast this with President Bush. He's young, he has sex appeal, charm. He is fairly well balanced, as far as not being terrifyingly liberal. He argues frequently for working across party lines. He's, from what I have read, consistent with his view points and voting history. Of course, there's a possibility that that isn't true, since I am only reporting what I've read

Well considering that I have become increasingly conservative in the last few years, the chances are practically nil that I would ever vote for him. I just really hated that the race factor was the only reason I'd ever heard people say about why they like him, so I really appreciate your insight. I knew (or maybe strongly hoped?) that there had to be more to it than just his race.
That's so strange, as I haven't heard the race card played all that often. I know there are some people who've said we aren't ready for a black president, or that now is the perfect time for a black president, but that was also in the context of a couple of other potential candidates. In any case, it's still obscenely early to be talking about presidential primaries.
You haven't heard it because you go to Vanderbilt instead of Cornell. People are so freaking obsessed with race here, and it drives me crazy. Issues concerning "diversity" (how to increase it, specifically) are in just about every issue of our main campus newspaper... people are just... bleh. People were so much more reasonable about race in high school. There was some racism, sure, but people were pretty public about their sentiments if they felt that way, and their views were basically met with an appropriate amount of condemnation... It wasn't this latent insanity that occurs here. Here, the conservatives are accused of being racist to the point where the newspapers are almost shut down by the university, and meanwhile prominent liberals preach diversity and then suddenly go off the deep end and stab blacks. There was also an occurrance in the past few years where several black guys attacked a random white girl because of her race. It's just crazy

Wow, that sounds like feminist issues here. Everything - EVERYTHING - is reduced to a gender/sex polemic. Almost every humanities department here feeds into women and gender studies, bonus points if you're not caucasian and can work that in, too.
And by "...liberals...suddenly go off the deep end and stab blacks", do you mean actually stabbing them?! Oh, my.
Yes. Last year, a prominent writer for our liberal newspaper Turn Left got drunk and stabbed a visiting black student while yelling racial epithets. Of course, this is blamed on The Cornell American (the conservative newspaper) because a few months prior, it published an article about how white-on-black crime is treated more seriously here than black-on-white. People have no logic whatsoever. ~sigh~
