2:42 PM 1/16/09 · In case you weren't paying attention, new episodes of Smallville started this past Thursday. After a long hiatus, after Doomsday crashed Chloe & Jimmy's wedding reception, we return with a vist from the 31st Century.
There was some good bits setting up the further evolution of Dommsday...but that wasn't the main thrust of this.
Even though I knew this was coming this time around, I didn't know it would be so soon or this interesting. Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, & Lightning Lad pursue a supervillain (The Persuader) from the future to Clark's barn. After taking him down and basically introducing themselves, Garth asks Clark where his cape is.
They try to flub some basic future details but issues kick off which leads to them staying longer and take on the mission to kill Chloe. In their time they''ve no memory of her, her name is not recorded in the annals of history...so they figure that to save the world from Brainiac there's nothing wrong with killing the body It's inhabiting.
This is not the first time this sort of thing has come up with any time travel scenario from any genre or fandom... If someone isn't recorded in history then their life isn't necessary to save. They just see Clark, who they only refer to as Kal, as who he'll be and not who he is. The fact he's not meeting the standard they're used to thinking of him as holding perplexes them, as well as his unwillingness to take a human life if it serves the ultimate good.
Lighting Lad's 'cape' coment made me think of where this series might be going but it could also be an alternate future they hail from where things are much different.
The subtle mention of Brainiac 5 gave me a grin.
