Ran into a long lost Buddy today, who had dissapeared to the land of drunken catholic Raiders for a year. We passed a soccer ball around, three out of four buddies in all. We all told stories of times missed out, and updated on our lives. Then the long lost Buddy informed us of her overabundance of fish (well her parents not wanting them was also a key factor). Being the animal loving citizens that we are, myself and the other Buddy who was not long lost each took a fish off the hands of the long lost Buddy. The two Buddies were overjoyed with their new pets, and took them to PetCo to go shopping. I even got my fish a companion.
That is the pre-story. Just so you know where i'm coming from.
Anyway. After I finished setting up my one gallon tank with colorful rocks and a few plants, I gazed in on Raphael and Oliver. (Raphael was the original, long lost Buddy's fish, he was part of a foursome, and would have eventually gotten a ninja turtle name, so I decided to keep her wishes). Anyway. As I watched I wondered. First I wondered whether Oliver knew that he was looking at himself, or if he thought he was staring into the eyes of an enemy. That would be sad considering your enemy shouldnt be yourself. Second, I looked at Raphael, the smaller of the two, and yet the one who is named after a 5' 2", 180 pound, Brown eyed mutant reptile who carries two Sai in his hands, loves the color red, enjoys hockey, baseball, golf, rap, metal, punk, cereal, the book Jurassic Park, and has been refered to as the "dark" one, the cynic, the pessimist, the crazy, the angry young man, or as he likes to say, the realist. (yes i went to the official website.)
Oliver is a good companion, and I am glad he is there but Raphael is different. He doesnt get confused by his reflection so easily. He swims timidly, cautious of his moves as he edges toward the crumbled up fish flakes. He seems to recognize you as you stare at him through the glass, and he will stare back for a moment. He likes to swim among the green leaves of the plant in the left corner, and looks at Oliver as if he is crazy. Oliver is daring. He swims curiously all around the small tank. He's daring with his food, swimming right into the filter that has a morsal of red flake caught beneath the bubbles. He knows he wont get caught.
I have two new, very different fish, who will hopefully still be alive to accompany me to college. You should meet them some time.
