nothing terribly exciting going on...
making mango sticky rice with dzuy at the moment, or rather, waiting for the rice to cook while posting.
my idea was for this to be the beginning of the new orleans trip description (only about 2 months late...) but i tend to get really distracted as i'm describing things that have already happened, so i may wander a bit. forgive me.
hmmmm, how to begin?
our journey there wasn't terribly exciting-- there were very uncomfortable, small airplane seats (southwest sucks) and a lot of southern accents and funny sounding children. i managed to board an airplane with no form of legitimate, government issued ID (i used my CSSSA ID from last year) and a few sketchy things in my bag and on my person with no problems.
we got there around 10 ish & took a taxi to our hotel. staggered outside into a blast of humidity while dzuy worried whether or not we'd be able to find food at the daunting hour of 10:30 PM. turns out, we just couldn't see bourbon street from our hotel. the minute we turned the corner there were restaurants, bars & daiquiri & pizza places aplenty. we got dragged into some random club and ordered drinks that cost more than a meal, but ended up getting paid $0.50 to drink them rather than paying for them :)
we wandered around bourbon street for the rest of the night...got our fix of tourist shops and voodoo nick-nacks & i discovered jello shots, which are far too much fun. ended up getting some greasy pizza at one of the 50,000,000,000 pizza & daquiri places after realizing that we'd wandered around far too long to be able to have some actual food somewhere.
the next morning we wandered some more (we did a lot of wandering :P), had some really cheesy lunch (3 different kinds of bread with a whole bunch of cheese & shrimp and alligator sausage or something like that), and then found a really fun antique shop that looked like nothing more than a small booth from the street. it was filled with fun things set up as if you had just walked into someone else's life--only it was a different person's life in each room. after that we headed over to jackson square where we got told a bad joke for a dollar...i think it was something about a condom for each day of the year, but i can't quite recall. we had really, really tasty dinner that night at K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen--chicken andouille gumbo and spicy pecan salmon with fried oysters (dzuy became addicted to these very quickly) and mashed potatoes along with really good coffee and a fun assortment of breads & biscuits.
(in case you haven't realized already, i stopped being a vegetarian rapidly after arriving in new orleans)
we wandered some more that night, found a scary mime lady who i was forced to take a picture with...she never once acknoweledged i was there, which made it all that much more creepy. had some tasty jello & headed back to the hotel...
k. i'm done for now, but i'll post about the pharmacy museum & all the scary things in there soon & will also explain the mystery of the monstrous crepe
(because it was very, very monstrous).
