Last night, I caught 300 with
passionsdemise. Interesting flick. Though I have not read the graphic novel, I feel confident saying that it is the best comic book adaptation I've yet seen, for the simple reason that it was the most like reading a comic book I've ever seen a movie be. Epic and over the top, that's how I like my movies, but some of the effects were a bit too cartoony for me.
The dialogue though, the dialogue. How absurd. The words of the Spartans ring true; mysticism is indeed a force of evil in this world, but it's certainly ironic. The Spartans themselves are also superstitious, having oracles, priests, and gods. Some have suggested that this movie is supposed to represent the war in Iraq. Well, that bit at least is on target. I must however dispute the allegory, as say what you will of the attitude of the Spartans, the Persians actually were attacking Greece, and the king led his men in to battle.
I enjoyed it. I went in expecting an over the top, cartoonish epic, and it performed admirably in that regard.
Now, to go play some God of War II, because apparently 300 isn't enough to sate my need for brutal and historically inaccurate video games about Spartans.
"I just want you to be clear on where you are. Which is Sparta."
