Most people have no idea what it really is at all.
If more people truly understood the art form, it would be very popular. Unfortunately, the West's involvement with pop culture is by it's very nature, escapist, rather than an involvement of engagement, it is predicated on escapism; a sort of dulling of the senses aimed at holding our collective fears or dissatisfactions temporarily at bay to try and shut the world out. The proliferation of all this impersonal electronica and such is really sad. It is music that is nothing more than a succession of cues in a MIDI engine made for hipsters. Vacuous and empty...giving the illusion of substance. Humans are so self deluded. It's as if they would rather go to a morgue to make love to inanimate things.
