Folks,
Here, in a nutshell, is an explanation of the world I created for my speculative fiction series/short pieces/ spin-offs/etc.
The Crossover: After the Great Northeast Blackout of 1965, spirits of old, ghosts, ancient gods, ghosts of every entity that has lived and died, have found a way to easily and frequently manifest themselves through animal, natural, and technological means. Mass possessions occurred rampantly, and about 1/3 of the world's population perished. The blackout directly coincides with the conclusion of the Vatican II Conference, where elders of the Catholic Church had made serious changes in Church policy and practice.
The Catholic Church, availing itself as the only organized, world-wide organization that is capable of combating this problem, emerged and began to return the Modern World into something that resembles normalcy. But advances in culture, technology, social reforms, were directly affected--if not stunted outright--by the Church's influence. World governments were allowed to run things as they saw fit, but always had the attention of the reserved counselor standing behind a leader or waiting in the back room.
Lines between superstition and religion were again blurred, like they were in the Middle Ages. The Separation of Church and State is a quaint if not forgotten concept. Clergy members take multiple roles: police officer, prosecutor, probation officer, judge, etc. Modern wizards or shaman--with a practical knowledge of the metaphysics of this Post-Crossover world--are either recruited by the Church, Governmental agencies, or try to carve a living for themselves. Ancestor Worship has enjoyed a serious resurgence, and many individuals quietly rebel against the still-evolving standards and laws the Church and the Government enforce. And nobody can truly define what Humanity (read: Life) really is: Is it Spirit? Is it the material benefits that an organic vessel can bring? Or is it somewhere in between?
My stories chronicle a world that struggles with this...
Peace.
