This is my 999th entry and I am fully dedicating it to So You Think You Can Dance.
Because this is my favorite season I've ever watched, and because I've never been this invested in SYTYCD, I've decided to make a compilation of my very favorite routines. I have a top 15 for couple routines and a top 5 each for group routines and for solos. I hope this may inspire one or two non-SYTYCD watchers to watch a few of my favorite routines and give this show that is pure joy and wonderfulness a chance at some point, and I hope that some of those of you who do watch agree with me on at least a few of these and can enjoy some of your favorite routines again, too!
Now: the pair routines:
I really did try to make this as stylistically diverse as possible and include as many pairings as possible, but I was only moderately successful with either of these tasks. I think I did okay with the styles, but not in terms of ranking. Look, we all know who I am, so I can't and won't apologize for the fact that there is A LOT of contemporary in the top 10. First, honorable mentions for routines that deserve them because they almost made it into my top 15 are :
The top 12 Gold Digger routine danced by Aaron and Jasmine and choreographed by NappyTabs
as well as the Hanging by a Thread top 16 routine danced by Tucker and Jenna and choreographed by Travis Wall
here. The reasons these aren't in my top 15 is that for the first one, I had too many Aaron/Jasmine routines and had to leave one out; and for the second one, I thought it was great, but grossly overrated (and I already have too much contemporary in there anyway), which is why I left it out. But now, without further ado, my real top 15.
15. Amy & Fik-Shun: After Party (Hip Hop, Top 18 Week, choreographed by NappyTabs)
This routine about two bell hops in a hotel is just plain fun and one of the best showcases for Amy and Fik-Shun's lovely personalities.

14. Aaron & Jasmine: Bottom of the River (Jazz, Top 20 Week, choreographed by Sonya Tayeh)
Man, I hate Aaron's pants in this routine and that almost made me not include it, but it's one of my favorite jazz pieces from the season and the routine that first made me fall in love with these two people who hadn't been on my radar at all before this.

13. Makenzie & Paul: You'll Find A Way (Jazz, Top 14 Week, choreographed by Sonya Tayeh)
Look, I'm not even going to pretend that at least 70% of why this is here isn't for the fact that Paul is shirtless in this routine. I AM ONLY HUMAN. No, but seriously, this is also a really well-danced piece by two people who have A LOT of chemistry with each other.

12. Hayley & All-Star tWitch: Locked Out Of Heaven (Hip Hop, Top 10 Week, choreographed by Christopher Scott)
This one is just a plain old FUN hip hop routine about a loan officer and a guy who wants a loan that got way too little credit on a night of very emotional, heavy pieces.

11. Aaron & Jasmine: Tears Always Win (Lyrical Hip Hop, Top 18 Week, choreographed by NappyTabs)
Definitely my favorite piece of lyrical hip hop this season. The amount of chemistry these two already had by week 2 of dancing together is astounding, and also, I think it's been established by now that I love them!

10. Hayley & Choreographer Leonardo: Este Es El Rey (Argentine Tango, Top 14 Week, choreographed by Miriam & Leonardo)
I'm always sad how little ballroom there is in my favorite routines of the season, especially considering my sister's background in ballroom dance which has made me somewhat of a ballroom aficionado, even if I understand very little of the technical aspects of it. I feel like a lot of ballroom choreographers aren't always able to create something that includes all the ballroom tricks they have up their sleeves and also connects with the audience. This Argentine tango, however, I was so thrilled with. Maybe it's cheating because Hayley wasn't dancing with her regular partner due to his injury that week, but this was wonderfully danced, hot, and is a great example of how good ballroom can be.

9. Tucker & All-Star Robert: Medicine (Contemporary, Top 10 Week, choreographed by Travis Wall)
It almost kills me to only put this at 9, but that just shows how many amazing routines there were this season. This piece about one brother helping the other come back from rock bottom is so beautiful. I adore emotional pieces which feature two male or two female dancers, and this was definitely my favorite two-guy routine of the season. Travis Wall drew from personal experience in this routine and it's just a thing of beauty. The music set to the piece is one of my favorites of the season, too.

8. Aaron & Jasmine: Mirror, Mirror (Jazz, Top 6 Week, choreographed by Sean Cheesman)
These two reuniting for the first time in a few weeks last week was balm to my soul, and that routine is a little intense, super fun and Jasmine does crazy things with her legs. I don't have a lot to say about this one, but I've rewatched it a seriously large number of times since it first aired a week ago.

7. Aaron & All-Star Kathryn: Kissing You (Contemporary, Top 10 Week, choreographed by Stacey Tookey)
Another one where I'm sad I can't rank this any higher. I think Kathryn is the All-Star of all All-Stars and at this point probably the most stunning (girl) dancer to come out of this show. I'm sad I never saw her season, so I have no idea how she did while she was on the show, but she's just fantastic now and I like her at least as much as I like Melanie (and it's no secret how much I adore her), so having Kathryn team up with my favorite guy this season for an emotionally charged, romantic piece like that was brilliant. This piece is very near and dear to my heart, one of my favorite things Stacey Tookey has ever choreographed.

6. Makenzie & Paul: The Edge Of Glory (Contemporary, Top 12 Week, choreographed by Mandy Moore)
This was my favorite routine these two ever danced. It was sizzling with chemistry, beautifully danced, and I will never understand why the audience didn't connect with Makenzie and why she was eliminated mostly based on this routine because it was BEAUTIFUL. Just look at that moment in the routine when Paul hangs on to Makenzie's arm and leg at the same time. CHILLS.

5. Hayley & Paul: I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) (Contemporary, Top 6 Week, choreographed by Dee Caspery)
I know I just talked about the chemistry Makenzie and Paul had with each other, but then, LOOK AT THESE TWO!!! This is the first and only time they ever danced together and it was one of my favorite performances of the season. I also never thought I would hear the 500 Miles song on SYTYCD, but I was proved wrong yet again because this version worked so beautifully with the routine. I completely understood when Mary told them afterwards that she hoped they'd make a baby. THEY ARE JUST SO BEAUTIFUL. Both of them. The fact that these two had to go home after this is a little painful, but I can't in all good conscience say that I'm upset with the top 4 this year because anyone leaving after top 6 round would have been painful.

4. Aaron & All-Star Melinda: When I Was Your Man (Tap, Top 4 Week, choreographed by Anthony Morigerato)
TAP TAP TAP!!! This was the season I was rooting for Team Tap, but two out of three crashed and burned pretty quickly unfortunately. Aaron, however, proved to be the most versatile, wonderful dancer and partner, and I'm so happy we got a proper, emotionally charged yet quiet partner tap routine because it was the first one I've seen on SYTYCD since I started watching in S7 (and it may have been the first two-person tap routine in general) and I just have a very soft spot for tap because it amazes me more than maybe any of the other styles on the show, so this had to be included.

3. Jasmine & All-Star Comfort: Who Run The World (Girls) (Hip Hop, Top 4 Week, choreographed by NappyTabs)
OH MAN! GIRLS WHO RUN THE WORLD. Enough said. Girl-Girl routines are often the highlights of the season for me and this one was no exception. Watching this, it just blows my mind that Jasmine isn't actually a hip hop dancer because she's SO GOOD at what she does, and with no disrespect to Comfort (whom I've started to adore this season), my eyes were drawn to Jasmine the entire time the first time I watched this. This routine was just plain fun and showed how incredibly awesome these two ladies are. GO, LADIES!

2. Amy & All-Star Travis: Wicked Game (Contemporary, Top 8 Week, choreographed by Travis Wall)
THIS ROUTINE!!!! I've not actually seen Travis dance very much- I've seen the Bench routine from season 2 and maybe 3-4 others and that's it, and I've always respected and admired his skill as a choreographer, but JESUS CHRIST, his partner work in this piece is so stunning I cannot deal. This entire piece is so stunning I can't deal, if I'm being honest. When Amy leaps into Travis' arms, I'm just 100% done every single time. This piece moved me to tears the first time I watched it and I was holding my breath throughout most of it. This was when I started to really respect Amy as not only a gifted and technical, but also a serious and emotional dancer. Then, TRAVIS. It's no secret Travis' work is my favorite, but for me, this one may even be in the top 3 pieces he's ever choreographed. Absolutely everything worked in this. Amy is an incredibly gorgeous dancer, as is Travis, obviously, their chemistry is aces, the music is lovely, the setting, too. That's why this is #2 on my list.

1. Aaron & Jasmine: The District Sleeps Alone Tonight (Contemporary, Top 14 Week, choreographed by Justin Giles)
If anyone had told me before this season started that my favorite routine this season would be about a tree, I would have told them they were crazy. But, here we are. This routine about the Giving Tree and the boy who took everything from the tree who was willing to give just that is MY everything. Of course, these two were my favorite pairing this season, and this was by far my favorite routine they've done. It's just so beautiful. Another routine I cried at the first time I watched it and that still makes me emotional whenever I watch it. God, the moment when she offers him her last apple and he takes it. I am just gone. This entire piece just shows how stunning they've been all along. The fact that this was only the fourth week of the show is amazing to me and I really hope we get a repeat performance of this in the finale to see how much further they've come since then. But honestly, this piece, to me, is just the epitome of why this partnership worked and why it worked as well as it did. These two are rightfully in the final 4 and I really hope they both win next week.

Okay, moving on to my top 5 group routines this season.
Normally, I wouldn't even have a category like this because group routines usually don't stick with me at all. This season was different, however, and I did manage to find five routines I really loved.
5. Top 18 Group Routine: Pretty Face (Jazz, Top 18 Week, choreographed by Sonya Tayeh and Christopher Scott)
I'm usually not a fan of big group routines like this, but I ADORE when Sonya Tayeh and Christopher Scott choreograph together because I feel they bring out the best in each other and manage to create something magical together pretty much every time.

4. Alan, Brittany, Jenna, and Paul: Wings (Samba, Meet the Top 20, choreographed by Louis van Amstel)
This song is so great, and setting a ballroom routine to it is even greater. I'm still sad Brittany was eliminated in week 1, I'd have loved to see her around at least another week or two, but this is great and another good showcase of how awesome ballroom can be when it tries to be.

3. Aaron, Alexis, Amy, Fik-Shun, Jasmine, Paul, Tucker: Tears of an Angel (Contemporary, Top 14 Week, choreographed by Bonnie Story)
I usually don't like 'issue-driven' routines at all because they usually feel contrived and are generally overhyped, but I really did love this stunning anti-bullying piece a whole lot.

2. Top 6 Guys (minus Tucker): It's A Man's World (Lyrical Hip Hop, Top 12 Week, choreographed by NappyTabs)
Oh man, this one is just really great. I don't have much to say about it beyond the fact that all of these guys are amazing dancers and this is proof of that, particularly in a season in which the girls generally dominated.

1. Aaron, Alexis, Curtis: You Really Did It (Tap, Meet the Top 20, choreographed by Anthony Morigerato)
THIS!!! This is what first got me invested in tap (and in Aaron) this season and it's just such a great, fun piece that I've rewatched countless times in the last few months. If you're only ever going to watch like a minute of a half of tap on SYTYCD, let this routine be it. I just love it so much.

And then, last but not least: THE SOLOS!!!
Again, I'm usually not a big fan of solo work on this show because often, the contestants don't really know how to properly showcase their abilities and YET AGAIN this season was different and there was some truly stunning work in there. The fact that I only have solos from three people in this top 5 is due to the fact that their solos were so amazing that they were in another league from everyone else's.
5. Jasmine Harper: Amazing Grace (Jazz, Top 6 Week)
There are two of Jasmine's solos in this top 5, and if SYTYCD knows what's good for it, she'll be back as a choreographer in a few years if her choreography for others is anywhere near as stunning as her own solo work.

4. Aaron Turner: You And I Both (Tap, Top 4 Week)
This guy just mesmerizes me to no end. His tap solos are fantastic, and while I'm so relieved he's never had to dance for his life this entire season, I wouldn't have minded at all seeing a few more of his solo pieces. SO GREAT!!!
3. Jasmine Harper: Endangered Species (Jazz, Top 14 Week, Dance For Your Life)
The fact that she had to dance for her life in the first place was ridiculous, but then she followed it up with this incredibly stunning piece, and that was the first time that season my sister and I looked at each other and were like, yep, she actually danced FOR HER LIFE. Beautiful!

2. Amy Yakima: Je Suis Malade (Contemporary, Audition)
This was by far my favorite audition from this year and still takes my breath away. Even though I would love for Jasmine to win, I absolutely won't be upset if Amy takes the crown this year. She's done BEAUTIFUL work on the show and her solo work has always been beyond magical.

1. Aaron Turner: Use Me (Tap, Top 6 Week)
Considering how much I've talked about it since last week, it should hardly come as a surprise that this is my favorite solo of the season. It was a difficult choice between this one and Amy's audition solo, but this one has got to take it just based on sheer joy alone. This makes me smile so wide and makes me so happy, and I can't believe anyone could ever do this. It astounds me, and that's why it's in #1 this year.

Wow, this took forever. Sorry to the 98% of you who don't care about this, my next entry is my 1000th and it will be all about YOU. I think? I'm not entirely sure yet, but I want it to be special somehow.
I'm also keeping this public for at least a little while in case any of my non-LJ friends want to have a look.
