She watches her family’s income run dry. Her father in the hospital. Mother in a shallow grave somewhere perhaps. Hungry.
She watches her neighbors and their hypocrisy, looking at her like she doesn’t belong. Can’t be like the rest of them. Can’t wear the same clothes.
She is just as American as the rest of them, she wants to say. In one hundred years, her grandchildren will be like them, forgetting their roots, their heritage full of sacrifice.
She is already forgetting…
