I don't think you'll ever be able to avoid this sort of situation - that some people just won't pay for something if they can get it for free, with no thought for the people who created that product. It's a sad fact that some people are just plain selfish. Some people will, though, if they can afford it, and products like games need to find a balance between affordability and value, such that enough people do buy it.

Growing up my family had minimal disposable income, so I was raised with the mentality to hunt the bargains, support quality stuff, and save. Now that I'm older with more disposable income, I still very rarely pay full price for something - but I do buy a heck of a lot more than I used to, but usually I'll wait for specials, discounts, etc. Occasionally I'll buy something second-hand too.

Still, I think a lot of software, and DLC, is overpriced. At least physical media has specials and drops in price - DLC specials are few and far between. Love Steam weekend specials though. ^_^

Those "Piracy is Stealing" ads at the start of some movies really tick me off. Rubbish, I say - it's not the same at all. Well, sounds like for the woman you witnessed, maybe it is closer to the truth. Now if only there was a photo that could be capped and put on failblog.com under the "parenting fail" category...
