“So we’re going out for dinner later, right, Light-kun? Because it’s my--”

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever.”

“You promise?”

“Yeah, I promise, Misa, ok? Now leave me alone, I’m busy.”

He sounds distracted, but Misa has faith. Light always keeps his promises. (except when he doesn’t) She tries to put a reassuring arm on his shoulder as if to tell him that it’s ok, she still believes in him and no matter how hard it gets, he still has someone who loves him. Adores him. Would die for him. Light shrugs her hand off as soon as it makes contact with the fabric of his shirt; Misa shrinks back.

She’s become accustomed to this reaction, but she still believes in the Kira that saved her soul. Trying to keep the hurt out of her voice, she backs away towards the door. “O-ok, so Misa Misa will just, umm, get ready, ok? Ganbatte!” Her black dress billows as she spins and leaves through the door, closing it with a click.

He just has to take her tonight. It’s her birthday. Misa is both simple-minded and brilliant, a genius and an idiot, and nobody ever realizes this duality. She herself cannot even see it because to her, all that exists is Light. Kira. As she starts thinking about all the romantic schemes she has planned for tonight, Misa hums a little ditty to herself and heads for her room to change.

Misa frowns as she rummages through her closet. Nothing seems to fit what she has in mind. Finally she settles on a dark red dress with black lace and quickly changes. She flies to the dresser in a rushed frenzy and soon, things are flying as she searches through her things. What would look better, black or red ribbons? Would he even notice? Somehow she doubts it, but they can’t hurt.

Fully accessorized, Misa touches up her foundation that she’d applied earlier in the day and then reaches for the lipstick. She lets out a gasp--her favorite color has run out. Misa shrieks in frustration. This is her favorite lipstick, her lucky lipstick. It’s the color she wore when she met Light at his house for the first time, and she’s been using the shade very sparingly over the years she’s known him. She hadn’t even noticed that it had run out.

A glance at the clock--5:00 PM. There’s still plenty of time. Light usually doesn’t finish with his Death Note business until well near 7:00. “Light, Misa Misa’s gonna go out for a bit!” she calls out in the general direction of the office.

There’s no reply, but she knows that he heard. Smiling, Misa grabs a jacket and heads out the front door to walk to the nearest fashion boutique.

It’s probably been less than 15 minutes when she hears the sirens. There’s this huge crowd of people outside the boutique--some girl has committed suicide by jumping off the top of the tall building next door to the boutique. Blood everywhere...

At some point in her life, Misa probably would have been disturbed. But now? Death’s no big deal. Everyone has to die sometime, the key is how you get there. She feels a tinge of pity for the dead girl--perhaps she had no way out, maybe she had been abused or felt threatened. But if she’d opted to kill herself, she obviously was weak.

Light has no need for weak people in the new kingdom he’s going to create on earth as Kira. To calm herself, Misa imagines that maybe the girl was some killer or thief or something. Maybe Light had just written her name down in his Note.

Coldly, Misa makes her way through the crowd, sneering a little at the body as she walks into the boutique. “M-miss!” the store clerk gasps as soon as Misa comes in.

“What?” Misa quips. She hasn’t the time for fangirls, so she hopes that the woman isn’t wanting an autograph or something.

“Th-there’s... there’s blood on your shoe!”

Gingerly, Misa lifts a leg and examines her stiletto--yeah, there’s just a bit of blood. (what a pity, she’d liked these shoes) Must have been from the scene outside. Face blank, Misa kicks the shoes off. “So Misa Misa’s going to need new shoes, huh?” she grins, but the smile doesn’t reach her eyes.

She strides briskly towards the make-up counter, the carpet feather-soft against her bare feet. Misa only barely acknowledges the sound of the clerk scrambling to throw the bloodied shoes away--she’s too busy picking a good shade. She smirks as she makes her choice--a nice blood red.

Misa picks out another pair of stilettos and pays. She’s not even annoyed when the clerk belatedly asks her for her autograph. Misa pulls out her new lipstick and signs a piece of paper with it. Classy. Maybe this will be her new lucky shade.

By the time she gets out, the crowd has gone and all that’s left is this dark red shape burned into the pavement where the girl had fallen. Poor thing--Misa affords a little thought. She ought to be a little bit kind on her birthday, after all.

When she gets home, the house is still. “Light-kun?” she asks to no one. She bursts into his office, but her hero has gone. She peers over at the desk and is happy to see that he’s left a note. Perhaps he’s gone to get her present!

Misa--

Something came up. I won’t be back until tomorrow, so take care of things until then.

Stunned, Misa re-reads the letter. Is that all? So short? Not even an apology or a “happy birthday”? Tears fill her eyes and she fights to keep them back--she doesn’t want to ruin her make-up.

Maybe it’s just a joke. She stubbornly sits on the couch and waits, waits, waits. Somewhere in all this waiting, she falls asleep and has a dream that she’s the girl that died. Life is hopeless, life is meaningless. The light has gone. In despair, she jumps and

falls

falls

falls.

Misa’s eyes snap open. She can hear the ticking sound of the clock now and squints to see the hands in the dark--just past midnight. He’s not coming--the restaurants have closed and anyway... It’s not her birthday anymore. Flaring up, Misa grabs the new lipstick from her clutch and throws it against the wall. Rage gives her strength (hell hath no fury like a woman scorned) and the little thing shatters.

Stupid lipstick, stupid Light and his stupid unkept promises. It’s clear that from now on, she can’t rely on any of those things. She has to make her own luck. Maybe then when she dies, she can die with a smile.
