having now seen all three movies, I've decided to once again attempt the books. I am now half way through The Two Towers, and have discovered I like it infinitely better than the first one. I think it has something to do with it now only taking a paragraph to figure out what to do instead of a minimum of three pages. It kind of helps the plot along. But I am discovering further differences between the books and the movies. The movies do get most of it, though: close enough so that those who have read the books don't complain too much, but also easy for those who haven't read them to understand what's going on.... So, half-way through and I should finish it by the end of the week (probably earlier). I have four more books to read, so I'm not sure when exactly I'll get to the Return of the King. I think it depends on how I feel after finishing this one.
