on boycotting

I can't remember whether i've ranted about boycotting before. But i think it's silly. if you boycott one thing, you pretty much have to boycott everything. well, there are some things i don't spend money on, like products with human collagen, because that makes sense... but what i heard on the radio this morning just... i don't know... i wanted to write about how silly it is.

Some guy (i don't remember his name or who he's connected with or anything... i was actually still in bed when this came on the clock radio) is trying to get people to boycott War of the Worlds because Tom Cruise is a follower of Scientology and is condescending to reporters. And for this to get mentioned on the news on a Nashville radio station, this guy is obviously getting heard by somebody. Now my theology conflicts with Tom's, and I don't much care for rude people... but if I boycott somebody's movie on the grounds that i disagree with his philosophy of life and think he's a snob... I better lock myself in a dark room and not watch movies, watch tv, read books, talk to anybody... or think, because i might change my own mind about something and then i'd disagree with something i used to believe.

I don't go see Tom's movies very often because I don't care for his acting. There are people with crappy morals out there making amazing movies. I'm sure I'll watch the movies; I don't plan on hanging out with the actors. It's not like it will make any difference to Tom's bank account if a handful of people don't show up for his new flick. These are probably the same people who will not buy the books I plan to write because I'm a Christian and plan to write fiction instead of Bible studies.

Not that i'm defending poor ole Tom Cruise or anything. I just think boycotting his movie because of his wacky beliefs and rudeness is stupid. How many actors have cheated on their spouses, killed their unborn babies, said really stupid things to fans and reporters... i mean really!?! Ashley Judd has been seen in our building a couple times, and she's a downright bitch. My coworker was on the elevator with her, and started to tell her how much she loves her movies and stuff (and she's not one to go all ooey gooey over a celebrity; she just wanted to say, hey, you're really talented and i enjoy your work), and Ashley pretty much snapped at her and said "My sister's a lot nicer than I am." So let's all boycott her next movie. Who's with me? Nobody???? Oh. Ok.
