Sometimes I just want to lie back and close my eyes and experience music, like I'm in a bowl of sound just swimming in it. Sometimes I find songs that hit me on a gut-deep level and when that happens I tend to obsess over them until I've glutted myself on whatever quality it is that they have that's so... touching. Today's been a day for that, so I figured I'd share what's currently providing me with nigh-spiritual experiences.
To me a fucking amazing love song and a great example of why simple, un-ambitious lyrics can say so much when strung with the proper background. The harp in this kills me too, and makes me want to pick mine up again, but if I do cover this (and I want to cover this, seriously) I'll probably do the harp bits on the keyboard. I also see the potential to flesh out the harmony a little... you hear that alto under the singer's voice on the chorus and some of the verses? It's beautiful, very subtle and not overdone the way it is, but I'm DYING to play around with it and see if adding a layer or two or increasing the complexity while dialing back the volume could create a more nuanced composition.
This song makes me feel like I'm falling off a cliff backward or sinking into deep water and watching the surface get slowly farther away. This is the official video below, but I found it on a shorter video
here. It's an STXI K/S video, only about two minutes, but well edited.

Lyrics: A falling star fell from your heart and landed in my eyes
I screamed aloud, as it tore through them, and now it's left me blind
The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart
And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeat
I tried to find the sound
But then it stopped, and I was in the darkness,
So darkness I became
The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart
I took the stars from our eyes, and then I made a map
And knew that somehow I could find my way back
Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you
The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart
The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart
I love Muse in general. Uprising is one of those songs (cover in the works) that never fails to twist my mood directly to that of the music. In general, there is something about this band that tends to reach into my chest and grab me by the heart. Does that sound painful? Yeah, it really is. Again, one of the things about this song that I really love is the simplicity, particularly of the piano part, and then also of the lyrics. It's a certain compositional restraint that just never fails to make me feel humble. I want to dance to this song like an idiot. Plus, it's got a kind of... IDK... vintage feel to it with the keyboard that warms my heart because you all know how much I dig the classics.
And on top of that, it's actually a pretty good love song. Sad, love lost, but sincere.

Lyrics: Far away
This ship is taking me far away
Far away from my memories
Of the people who care if I live or die
The starlight
I will be chasing your starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore
Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms
My life
You electrify my life
Let's conspire to re-ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive
I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away, never fade away
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes & revelations
And our hopes and expectations
Black holes & revelations
Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms
Far away
This ship is taking me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die
I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away, never fade away
And our hopes and expectations
Black holes & revelations, yeah
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes & revelations
Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
Entwine, another of my favorites. It's about time I listed something METAL and not a love song, yeah? This one's more existential and though personally I'm not quite as angsty as the lyrics, I still find them touching.

Lyrics: I'm on my way
I'm on my way to lose it all
I'm a stranger to myself, I can't go on
I'm all outta space
And I'm surrounded by the wall
I believe that my mind has caught a million storms
Falling down
When you lose all that you are
[refrain:]
I surrender
I kneal down
I surrender...
I'm outta faith
I think I'm frail design of life
Deep inside in denial
The shades have grown in silence
I hide my face
I close my eyes
Deep inside in my mind the pain has
corner around me
Falling down
When you lose all that you are
[refrain 2 (2x):]
I surrender
I kneal down
I'm dying to find the reason to hold on
Call the lies! Call the lies!
I surrender...
