You can't blame yourself for this! You didn't intend for this to happen, and you were uncertain. Even if you hadn't told anyone, they still probably would have done this. And with people like them, you never know. What if telling someone made them go out and kill ten people or more? This isn't your fault!

Just to show that I'm not just saying it for the sake of saying it, when you don't wanna get caught for something, you lie, right? Well, say they got wind that the police started to closely associate them with the murders. They'd lie. But they might not have just lied, they could have purposefully commited another murder, similar enough that the police would associate it with the same murderer, but in such a manner that they knew would throw the police off of their trail. Encouraged, they continue this path, and do it again, and again, and again.

Er. That was a little ramble-y, and just one of a few hypothetical situations, of course, but the point still stands.
