But Kazuya never expected to fall in love...

--

Yamapi briefly wondered just what the rest of his friends were thinking. He chanced a look at the older man walking beside him and he tried not to sigh. A tense silence had fallen between them after Kazuya and Uchi had pushed them out of the room, telling them to go get more ice for Ryo’s jaw, despite Ryo’s complains that his jaw wasn’t hurting anymore. It was then followed by an order to go get some drinks as well.

“You ever think that people are plotting behind your back?” he commented idly, casting a dark look in the direction from which they had come.

“I know they do” Ryo said calmly, rolling his eyes, “Because Uchi is as discreet as Taguchi on a sugar high”

However, Uchi was apparently, more observant than a sugar high Taguchi, because his best friend had noticed the small tension that still existed between him and Yamapi.

“Kazu-chan isn’t very good at hiding things from me…” Yamapi said with an amused grin, “He tries, but it fails in the end”

There was a long pause.

“But since they have us out here, let’s do what they want us to do”

“You mean talk about girly things like feelings?” Ryo asked in horror.

Yamapi couldn’t help but laugh, “You could say you were forced into it. Your manly pride will still be intact that way”

Ryo made a face, “You tell anyone and I’ll deny it - as well as maim you”

Yamapi raised an eyebrow, “I’d like to see you try”

“Well…” Ryo retorted, “Obviously the ground did it for me already”

Then he froze, realizing that those scrapes Yamapi had were from when Ryo had pushed him onto the ground. He looked away, shame filling him when he realized he really had hurt the younger man.

Silence surrounded them for another long, almost agonizing moment.

“I told you that I forgive you didn't I?”

“But I was still such an asshole” Ryo chagrined. He could still remember the pain that had been in Yamapi’s voice when he walked away that time - and the more he thought about it, the more terrible he felt. He had acted so much like Jin was acting right now - and it sickened him that he had acted like that.

“Well, considering you have some issues to deal with, I’ll say I forgive you again” Yamapi said with a grin. Ryo’s hands had found themselves on Yamapi’s arm, tracing the cuts and scrapes that had started to heal. Then it faltered for a moment.

“Because I might have done the same thing if…it was me”

Ryo’s head snapped up.

“Uchi told us about it…his kidnapping…and you had seen him and was there, so you must have been so scared at the time…”

Ryo wanted to tell Yamapi to stop, to stop talking about the event that had traumatized him for most of his life. But somehow, he couldn’t. He just stood there, watching the younger man as he talked, a faraway look in his eyes, as though he was remembering something similar, something just as painful.

“So I’m sorry for calling you an asshole back then” Yamapi finished, and Ryo realized he had been staring to intently at the younger man that he had missed half of what Yamapi had just said.

And yet, he couldn’t bring himself to say anything in response to those words. Instead, he ignored the fact that this was getting too touch-feely than he usually allowed; ignored the fact that this whole topic made him remember everything that had happened when he was a child; and he ignored the fact that his hands were still tracing Yamapi’s arms, as if  he did it enough, he could erase the pain that he had caused.

“What happened to you?” he croaked out.

The question was ambiguous, difficult for a stranger to understand, but…

Yamapi smiled in a way that made Ryo realized why he was forgiven so easily - because the taller man understood, because he had gone through the pain as well.

“Life”, was Yamapi’s answer.

Jin could hardly believe what he was seeing - he was seething. The sight of his best friend, locked in such a conversation with the person he hated second most in the world, was infuriating him beyond belief. He wasted no time in stalking forward, cutting off the conversation.

“Jin” Ryo said in surprise.

“How could you?!” Jin nearly screamed in anger, “You know what they’ve done! Why the hell are you with one of them?! Only yesterday, you were all up for hating them just as much as I do!”

“Jin!”

“You! You must have done something to him - fed him some sort of lie; you’re despicable, you vile, good for nothing -” he turned angrily toward Yamapi.

“Jin!” Ryo’s angered yell echoed through the gardens as he pulled Jin away from his intended beating target, “Shut up. Just shut up!”

“What the hell Ryo?! I thought you were on my side in this - I thought; I thought you were my friend!”

“I am!” Ryo shouted angrily, “But you have no right to call him things like that!”

“So you’re his defender now? Only a little while ago, you were up for hating him!” Jin scowled angrily. He glared furiously at Yamapi.

“This is all some ploy to trick my best friend onto your side isn’t it?!”

“I -”

“Whatever you wanted to do, I will not believe yours or Kazumi’s lies again! You’re both nothing but liars!”

Yamapi looked ready to yell back, but he was cut off by Ryo.

“And you’re so sure they’re lies!” Ryo jumped in, glaring at Jin, “I am not that easily tricked! You’d think a friend would have a higher opinion of me!”

“I do!”

“Then trust me in this. What you think happened, and what really happened, is of course, the same. But their reasons for doing what they did…it’s not what you think” Ryo said as calmly as he could.

“Of course it is!” Jin growled out angrily.

“Do you think I’d still be talking to them like this if their intentions really were to hurt you?” Ryo asked just a bit defensively, “Kazumi didn’t mean to do anything to hurt you Jin; I’ll say it again and again with the same confidence - she didn’t mean it”

“It’s hard not to mean it when you’re lying” Jin spat out. Then with a disgusted look at Ryo, he stormed out of the room.

*               *               *

Kazuya walked nervously out to the compound where the event was taking place. He glanced beside him to Yamapi, who was nodded encouragingly, “You’ll be fine, Kazu-chan”

The younger man bit his lip, “But Pi…”

“I know you’ve never ridden before but there will be stable hands around who’ll help you if you get into any trouble…” his best friend seemed more like he was trying to reassure himself more than Kazuya.

Kazuya couldn’t help but laugh at that, “Trust in your own words, Pi”

“I do!” Yamapi faltered at the look Kazuya gave him, “I’d…just trust them more if you stayed on the ground” he added sheepishly.

“The horse isn’t that high up” Ryo commented from behind them, “Don’t worry”

“If you say so” Yamapi said doubtfully.

“At least you don’t have to be on one Pi” Kazuya said ruefully, “You don’t have to worry about falling and breaking your neck”

“You won’t fall and break your neck” Kusano said reassuringly, “Don’t be scared”

“I’m not…” Kazuya said but he couldn’t help but glance a look at the horses in apprehension. He also saw the prince there and he couldn’t help but just keep staring at him. Right now, talking with his friends, Jin still seemed so - so angry, so hurt.

I’m the one who did that, he thought sadly.

As if sensing Kazuya’s thoughts, Yamapi laid a comforting hand on his shoulder, “Do your best” he said and Kazuya wasn’t sure if he meant to do his best in this event, or to do his best with Jin.

This would be the first event he would be participating in, with Jin knowing the truth. He tried not to sigh, but he couldn’t help the small one that escaped him. Jin, if what he heard from Ryo and Yamapi was anything to go by, was still angry and extremely bitter.

He still hated Kazuya.

As if to prove this fact, as Kazuya was directed to stand by Jin while they waited for the stable hands to help them on their horses, Jin muttered a, “Don’t think about talking to me unless it’s necessary, princess”

Kazuya turned saddened eyes on Jin, but the older man had looked away.

“I’m sorry” he whispered quietly.

If Jin heard him, he didn’t show it and instead, walked over to the stable hand that had called him over.

“This way, your highness” the other said politely to Kazuya. He nodded and followed, gazing sadly behind him at Jin’s retreating back.

He then stared helplessly at the man helping him.

“Your highness has forgotten how to mount a horse?” he asked.

Kazuya then realized that like Jin and the noble children of the North Kingdom, Kazumi must have learnt to ride as well. Jin probably hadn’t realized that Kazumi would have been given lessons as well, or he would have gotten suspicious of Kazuya earlier on.

“Yes” Kazuya lied.

Lies again, he couldn’t help but think a bit bitterly.

Jin, who was already on his horse, was listening despite the fact that his head was turned away from Kazuya, obviously intent on ignoring him.

After much difficulty, Kazuya was up on the horse. He held the reins tightly, not willing to risk falling off. He shifted a little, trying to adjust to the feeling of being on a horse.

“You do this to make him move”

Kazuya nodded at the stable hand’s instructions, “Like this?” he asked, copying the movement. The horse trotted forward a short distance.

“Exactly. That’s all you need to do”

“Thank you”

Before long, everything was ready - the villagers  had all convened around the compound and Kazuya and Jin were on their horses, side by side; what they had to do, apparently, was to show off their ability with the horse and just show they knew the basics. What the villagers were hoping for, was to see the prince and princess compete with good sportsmanship.

Kazuya took a deep breath as Jin got his horse to move. The prince had had years of lessons, and it showed - he controlled the horse in a way that showed he was familiar. Kazuya’s movements were jerky and unsure; he had absolutely no idea what to do.

He sent a nervous look at Jin, who was starting to make his horse jump over the hurdles inside the large compound. He couldn’t keep up. He was getting more and more nervous as he looked at Jin and his horse - he couldn’t do anything like that.

He could barely keep up with that speed.

Hesitantly, he copied what Jin had done and kicked at the horse's side and then as the horse sped up, his heart nearly skipped a beat.

I can’t do this - oh god, I can’t do this. What was I thinking? I’ve never ridden before!

“Prince -” he tried to call out, wanting to ask Jin to help him.

Like you had promised…

But Jin just ignored him and Kazuya was left to try to manage on his own.

Panicking, he kicked again and at the same time, gave the reins a tug, movements jerky, and it was to his surprise and with a scream that the horse suddenly gave a loud whinny of protest, and then reared on his hind legs. The sudden movement of suddenly being lifted up and feeling as though he would fall anytime made Kazuya scream.

Kazuya’s scream caught the attention of everyone.

Kazuya held on for dear life as the horse, obviously against having Kazuya as a rider, continued to try to throw him off. Kazuya whimpered; this was not going well - not going well at all.

He was briefly aware of panicked screams and shouts, but those were half-hidden by his own whimpers and the loud sound of the horse’s whinny.

The last thing he heard before he felt himself flying and everything going black was the sound of someone cursing and telling him to hold on.

*               *               *

“Is he okay?” Uchi asked in concern as he peeked his head in through the door to Kazuya’s room, where the unconscious man had been put so that a South Kingdom doctor could look at him. The doctor had left, murmuring something about ‘looking so much like her’, so they had deemed it safe to come in.

"He’s fine” Jin retorted, standing up.

“Jin…”

“I don’t want to hear it” Jin snapped, “I helped, but that was it - I wasn’t going to have him dead because I didn’t feel like helping - I don’t care about him”

Ryo bristled, “And if we hadn’t shouted at you, you wouldn’t have helped at all” he accused, “Is that it?”

“Yes” Jin said with conviction, “I told you that I don’t care about a liar like -”

He was cut off when a fist suddenly slammed into his face. The sickening crunch made everyone else wince.

“What the hell Ryo?!” Jin yelled angrily.

“I’ve had enough of your ‘woe is me’ attitude! You’ve done nothing but moan and gripe at everything and everyone, accusing everyone who’s helping you of being against you; can’t you fucking see that there are no sides to this like you think there are?!”

“He lied -”

“Oh, he lied. Because he didn’t want war to break out! You’re just being a selfish bastard! You’re doing nothing but wallowing in your self-pity! Well, I’m sorry if I don’t agree with your little pity party!” Ryo shouted, “If you thought about it, for just one minute, you would realize that the person that you had fallen in love with, is still the same person! He’s a different gender; has a different name, but he’s the same person!”

“No, he -”

“Stop being a spoiled brat Jin!” Ryo kept yelling, “All you’re doing is getting everyone annoyed and hurting the one person who cares about you the most!” he pointed at the unconscious Kazuya, “Stop being a self-pitying idiot and listen to everyone around you for once! Because if you are the cause of the outbreak of war this time around, suffice to say, I and everyone else here” Ryo’s voice turned cold, “Will hate you”

Jin stared.

“I don’t care what other complaints you have. You will sit down. You will listen when he wakes up, and you will not keep spouting off things about how they’re evil liars. You will listen” Ryo hissed, his hand fisting the front of Jin’s shirt, “Understand?”

And under Ryo’s furious gaze, all Jin could do was nod.
