It's been a few years since I reread the best Slayers fanfic ever written...
Holy dang, I can't even remember if this just reflected ideas I already had, or if it inspired a number of things. I thought it was epic the first time I read it. After the second time I said that it had every single one of my favorite plot devices. This time, however, it is has even more.
The concept of infinite parallel and alternate worlds, the meshing of magic and science, redeemable villains, questionable morality in the servants of Light, demons with a capacity for good, emphasis of the balance of Light and Dark and the grey between, the chaos of humanity...
The first form of the world being a place composed of "thought and notion", until its inhabitants matured enough to move on to the more solid and unchangeable yet everchanging reality, eventually learning that the home they thought was lost is actually the world they visit each night, a World of Dreams....
And finally a contest between Order and Chaos, as Order tries to freeze the world of Chaos and turn it into eternal, unchanging "perfection".
this last part being the inspiration for the title of my other journal (Ordered Chaos), and strangely echoing the story of The Wake rpg, of the Deva Isis trying to bring total Order to her reality, which was one of the two things that got me thinking about this fanfic again in the first place.
I wish I'd convinced Ryuu to try this fic, back when we were on speaking terms. I did mention it to her, but only briefly. So much of her reminds me of Lina, too.
Whatever.
This trilogy is a pretty good read even the third time around.
It also gave me a nifty technical term for what Song's currently trying to do with magic. Thaumatological hacking.
