It is said that having enemies can be more useful than having friends, and perhaps that is true, but I have found that the best way to accomplish something is to make friends out of your enemies.
If someone sees you as a force working against his or her goals, he or she may go out of his way to interfere with you. If, however, he sees you as a potential ally or a useful contact, he is more likely to help you. What's more, if you understand him and he understands you, even if you do not entirely agree with each other, it becomes much easier to compromise.
That is the explanation for why I repeatedly find myself doing this: "So you're a mysterious, potentially evil demonic being with questionable motives? Hi, let's be friends!"
I'll try not to fall in love with this one.
