So, it's been a month since I took the Chemistry Praxis II exam.  I got out of it scared as hell.  Not because I felt I did poorly on it, but because I knew I'd made stupid mistakes.  There were some things I flat out didn't know, (history of chemistry stuff) and some things that I'd only seen once thirteen years ago (nuclear chemistry).  But there ( Read more... )

It means that when I finally get my teaching license I'm certified to teach chemistry. It also means that in the mean time I'm "endorsed" to substitute chemistry. Not quite sure what that means, though, other than "No really. I know my chemistry. And I have the paperwork to prove it."

A degree in anything isn't enough to teach anything.

It's like the certifications CS people have to go through. Yes, you can say you have a CS degree and are familiar/proficient with a given language, but without the certifications from an independent body, there's no way for an employer to quickly know that for certain. They'd have to take your word on it. Then, if you aren't as proficient as you claimed, they've wasted time and money on you.
