I’m not even gonna say long time, no see. I can’t help it… when I’m not being lazy, I’m busy. So yeah… whatever! I think I’ll put up an update but doesn’t work out that way.
Anyway, *squeeeee* just saw the new episode of Supernatural. Can’t say I’m blown away but it was a good episode. With how Supernatural had been before hiatus, I wasn’t hoping for much but it definitely exceeded my expectations. Now onto the main part of the review.
What struck me the most about the episode is the change in places between the boys. I distinctly remember the show starting off with Sam being skeptical about this whole hunting business, like in Route 666, when they are discussing the truck, Sam says, “I miss conversations that didn’t start with “this killer truck”.” In this episode, when Sam talks about contacting the dead boy, Dean’s goes, “I love how matter of fact you are about that. Strange lives.” It shows how subtly the balance has shifted. Suddenly, Dean, the hunter, confident about the job and the supernatural, who has only done this and nothing else his whole life, is finding it strange, while Sam whose aspirations were to do with nothing remotely unnatural is fitting in completely, like he always wanted to do this.
I don’t know how deliberate it is on Kripke’s part, whether he thought every small thing out or whether it just happened that way, but it’s there. One can see how Dean’s experience in Hell has changed his attitude, he’s just not the same person he was four years ago or even a year ago. While Sam has also changed, but his transition period has been longer, yet his character essentially hasn’t changed in some ways. Like he was always keeping secrets from Dean, it’s not something new he’s started to do. He hid his identity from friends, his dream about Jessica’s death, his visions, his superpowers(?) etc. Dean has always been more open, his promise to John, and his time in Hell, etc.
Now onto the main episode itself. I liked that for once Dean didn’t let go everything Sam said the last time so easily. It’s always the same for Sam, whenever he’s under any kind of influence, he’ll say some pretty harsh things to Dean, and once it’s over, he’ll pretend to not remember it. Or say, “You know I didn’t mean all those things, right Dean?” when he so obviously did. And Dean always let it go, everytime, so I enjoyed seeing him not letting it pass so easily this time around. That’s another change in Dean, he’s not ready to take something at face value anymore, not ready to be jerked around. He’s sick of it, between Hell, Sam and Castiel.
However, I detested Dean ready to believe in miracles. I know it’s explained off by saying he wants, needs to believe it, but even then, it seems very out of character. And his justification, it wasn’t a ghost or a demon… at which point I was shocked. Seriously? This show started off exploring myths and legends like Woman in White, Bloody Mary, Wendigo, Hook Man, Pagan Gods, should I go on(?) and now, he thinks it’s a miracle just because it’s not a ghost or demon… that’s what Supernatural has become limited to?
Another one of my issues was the graveyard scene. Since when does Dean have a problem with gunning anything that’s unnatural? And he’s talking about being no different from the rest but right up until he went to Hell, we saw him tell Sam many times that they are not like other people. While we can excuse Dean; saying his years in Hell made him question his thinking, probably changing it vastly, what about Sam? Can just four years, four months actually, change him that much, that drastically, that soon? I don’t think so; Kripke is just going wrong with Sam.
The scene where they couldn’t lie to the person in the graveyard grated on my nerves. For four years, we’ve seen them as master con artists , able to get out of any situation but here they couldn’t even think of a plausible story, they’ve been in worse situations and got out just fine.
But reallly, how creepy was Sam? He can do the whole hand-flicking thing… what’s next? It screams DEMON! I’m just speechless…. OH SAM!
I loved Dean’s attitude to Sam later on. He knows Sam is blatantly lying to him and he’s sick of Sam’s lies, secrets and deceptions; knows that he can preach to Sam all he wants to no avail, so he not even gonna try. But he’s also not going to take any shit and treat him like an idiot. All this time, he goofed off and let it blow when Sam treated him like he was just a dodo with the IQ of a five year old. Not anymore. GO DEANO!
Another point to Dean for the astral projection plan. Nice to see Pamela, although not a pleasure, she was downright bitchy for no reason. She’s involved in this whole supernatural thing, of course, there are going to be consequences, which hunter hasn’t lost something dear to him? And what’s the point of her abilities and involvement in the unnatural if she doesn’t want to help or be involved.
Something that has bothered me for the last three years was that up until Season 1 the boys were handling everything well and on their own, but then come Season 2, they became dependent on the Roadhouse for every small need, S3, it was Bobby who was continuously rescuing them and now Pamela and Castiel. Every season they use a couple of characters thoroughly and then, dispense off with them. What happened to the other contacts they’d made? Like Missouri who was better psychic than Pamela. Or that hunter in the Season 3 premiere. Or even Jo and Ellen. Gah, Kripke!
I adored that despite all the changes, Dean hasn’t lost his crazy sense of humor. Am I making you uncomfortable? You’re such a prude! :P
I loathed how Sam lied to the poor boy. Is this the same Sam who had been so considerate to Molly in Roadkill? What has he become? Scary!
They brought Tessa back. How cool is that? I loved her and it was nice to see her. She even refreshed Dean’s memory… it would have been sad if that had been lost forever. But lol, it seems every chick wants to get a piece of Dean, human or not. :D And she was totally putting the moves on him, even if she denies it. Hell, who wouldn’t? And Dean missed her, heehee. But seriously, he explains a hole in his gut and wishes he had gone with her, but he didn’t even remember that until 5 minutes before, so really how is that even possible. Continuity, Krips, continuity!
“I’ll meet you back at Mr. Miagi’s.” :P The kid doesn’t get that joke; I feel old. And the scene where they are learning how to be ghosts was soooooo Ghost (the movie) but I like it anyway. And them showing off, heh.
Alastair using rock salt against them, was it ironic or what? While Sam tried his powers while Dean was around… and Alastair mentioned them. I had hoped Dean would take up an issue about that but really has given up, hasn’t he?
Castiel is back! *dances* I missed him. Although after everything I’ve heard that is supposed to happen this season and hearing what Tessa had to say, I’m not sure I love that angel. But he sure was cool with that lightening trick on Alastair. J And very smart of him to notice that Dean always does the opposite of what is told. It’s part of his nature. Except when it’s Dad. I would have loved it Tessa would have come in face with Castiel, that would have been some nice supernaturally mixing going on.
That last scene between Dean Tessa and Cole; that was awesomeness. Dean made complete sense, told the truth and didn’t try and tell the kid that it’s a better place bullshit. I loved that Mr. Fearless showed his fears, that inside everyone’s scared, now matter how hard they pretend not to be. It’s this innate sense of Dean. But yet, he kept lying to himself, that since he got rescued by Angels, and God commanded it, whatever was supposed to happen to him was going to be good. I liked how Tessa took the time to dispel it, even though in one way she is also a worker of God, she didn’t mince words or behave as if it’s great that the Angels are protecting him. That he needs to stop trusting the angels so much and trust his instincts which have always led him perfectly.
Oh gawd, but I was horrified that he repeated that better place crap to Pamela, I mean, C’MON! I loved that Pamela had the good sense to warn Sam…that no matter what Sam thinks what he’s doing, it’s never a good thing, and he’s gonna be so screwed. Can someone please, like literally, kick sense into that big doofus?
This episode was mainly about kicking some sense into the guys, making them reach this huge realization. Dean realized that even though he’s on the good side, it’s not necessary whatever might happen to him will be good. That it’s all good. Stop believing that he’s been blessed. Whereas Sam was hit with the fact that whatever he might be doing and however good his intentions are, it will never lead to anything good. So basically they destroyed any notion that anything good will come out of this whole war, not for them, no matter which side they are fighting for, or what their path to fight it is. And that just depresses me. Makes me feel completely miserable.
Now time for my theory. I just saw the Space promo for next week which highly spoiler-y and I’m so scared for Sam. But yeah, it makes me realize that I totally hate Sam as of that moment. It’s hideous and gross and OMG! SAM, what the fuck is wrong with you? And Dean. Poor baby! It totally sets the stage for some major Dean angst. But Dean’s also kinda scary with the whole torturing thing.
Now here’s what I think might happen or what things are like. I think that so far, we’ve thought that Ruby was trying to help Sam, that we finally have a demon with good intentions. I don’t think so. We’ve all believed she’s had a hidden agenda but never thought what it might be. I think that maybe she is against Lilith… that her agenda is to overthrow Lilith, but why? Right? Maybe she was with YED in his fight to recruit Sam and lead his demon army. And now with YED gone, she’s taken charge and is going to try to turn Sam, to lead Azazel’s cause. And looking at Azazel, she realized that his way of getting Sam was all wrong, so she decided she’d befriend him, explore his abilities and exploit them to the fullest… and break that one link which was the cause for YED’s failure. His bond with Dean. And she’s succeeding. Dude, did you see the look in her eyes when Sam’s *chokes* feeding off of her? Evil or what?
We also know now why the demons wanted Dean in Hell. They wanted a righteous man to break the first seal. Now with Sam being the eventual leader of a demon army, and souls only going to Hell for their sins, it’s obvious that there wasn’t anyone righteous in Hell. Except maybe John… but then again John had done some very questionable things and probably didn’t give into torture all that time. So they get Dean into Hell, through a deal and set about breaking him…. and succeed. Which comes to my theory about why the angels rescued him. Once this seal was broken, they had to do something right. Maybe because he broke the first seal, somehow he was very important to this whole apocalypse. And so, they got him out, to maybe use him or maybe his presence in hell was necessary so they hoped taking him away from there would somehow help their cause. I’m not clear about this yet… but yeah something smells rotten here alright.
Until next time then.
ETA: I just noticed that I just wrote a twenty-two hundred word review. WOW! Who’d have thought? When I do something I really do it in style, don’t I?
