CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Sam Linnfer aka Lucifer from “Waywalkers” and “Timekeepers” by Catherine Webb
In-Game Name: Sam Linnfer, but is known to use Sebastian Teufel and Luc Satise. Real name is Lucifer
Age: 333, but appears to be in his early to mid 20’s
Gender: Male
Position & Ship: Technology Master on the Convoy
Appearance:
Sam has thick, black hair and a pale, boyish face. He’s only slightly taller than the average person and has a slim build. His eyes are so dark that it could be said that they are black as well, except no one’s been able to look meet his gaze long enough to find out.
Sam mostly wears black clothing, a shapeless black shirt, a baggy black jumper, large black coat. The idea that he wears black from vanity is laughable as he wears a pair of very old and worn shoes, never does his cuffs and his shirt buttons don’t match. If he gets cold he wears a scruffy blue and grey scarf that is obviously hand-knitted. He carries around a much worn leather satchel.
He also has a faint accent that no one can seem to identify the origin of.
Personality:
Although Sam is the devil incarnate, he isn’t really a bad fellow. He’s a bit eccentric with a quirky, sarcastic sense of humour and no one ever quite knows what to make of him. Generally he’s easy going, if a little mysterious. He is a man of contradictions - he has little regard for authority and yet he himself gives off an air of command, he acts with the surety of youth, but clearly has experienced a long life. Sam also has a strange habit of attaching unusual nicknames on people.
He’s a bit cynical and wary of trusting people as he’s been betrayed and alienated many times, not to mention he tends to outlive most people. He doesn’t normally bond with other people, but to those he does, he cares for them deeply.
Just because he doesn’t act like the devil he’s portrayed to be, doesn’t make him a saint. One doesn’t live as long as he does and not learn a few tricks. He has no qualms about killing, though he would prefer not to. When pressed, Sam will fight for his survival and will use any dirty tricks to ensure it.
Abilities/Weapons:
As a representation of his position as a ‘Prince of Heaven’ he has a sword, dagger and a crown all made from silver. His crown is a thin band, a circlet. It has been said that anyone else who puts on the crown will go mad, although Sam isn’t sure if that’s true or not. All these are magically bound to him and he is able to locate them from anywhere in the world.
Being a Son of Magic, Sam has a vast knowledge in magic. He is capable of performing a wide range of spells such as scrying, illusions and wards. He can only scry for someone if he knows who they are, he can’t hold a good illusion against someone who is magically trained for any long periods of time and wards only slow down attacks and do not stop them fully, unless they were prepared in advance or defend against one type of attack only, such as fire magic. With offensive magic he can get one large spell going, but it limits what he can do as he has doesn’t have the concentration to do anything else.
He also heals much faster than normal people and is capable of healing from wounds that would be fatal in others. His healing seems to be subjective, with minor injuries like paper cuts taking the same amount of time to heal as other people while major injuries that should take months to heal, only take weeks or even days.
He has never been formally trained to use his sword, but he has had some grasp of the basics.
The most notable power he has is the Light. Sam takes the thoughts of all those people in his vicinity and condenses it into a burst of light. The target is hit with the condensed thoughts of one aspect. For example if Sam took the thoughts of fear then the target would feel the fear of all those people around him. In the canon, Sam is able to envelop the whole world with the Light, but that practically meant that he either dies or becomes stark, raving mad, not to mention it was more epic in proportions. So in the game I'm thinking of having a maximum distance of 1 km, but Sam won't go that far, for fear of losing his mind. Although there is always the risk that he loses control of it. The effect of the Light doesn't last long on his opponent, they typically lose consciousness as they are overwhelmed with all those different thoughts. By the time they regain consciousness the thoughts should be gone, but they would be expected to be rather shaken by the experience. How long until a full recovery would depend on the character. The effect on those whose minds touched by the Light are minimal, they would only notice a bright, white light enveloping everything around them and have a thought at the back of their minds on whatever Sam is channelling.
The victim receives just the emotion when hit with the Light and whether or not it could be resisted depends on the strength of the victim's mind and how many minds he's tapped into. Generally if they're a very focused individual then they should be able to shake off its effects within 30 minutes, normal people might start feeling better after a couple of hours. It's also rather simple to counteract it, the moment Sam releases the Light he's a sitting duck. He just kind of stands there and the only reason no one's tried to attack him at this point is because they're rather distracted by the bright white light, but there is always the chance that he might somehow manage to target his opponent when they try to kill him while he's distracted. Also, since thinking coherently is difficult for him when he has managed to bring the Light back within himself, he might even fail to use it and just collapse on the spot. At that point the Light just sort of dissipates, but the effects on Sam are still the same.
How well can your character hack?:
He can’t hack at all. He’s never seen the point in learning when there are other methods available for him to obtain any information he needs.
Weaknesses:
While Sam is immortal, he isn’t infallible. He can’t exceed the physical limits of a normal human and he takes damage just like a normal human would. Dragon bone and enchanted silver are capable of killing him as they create wounds that take the same time as normal humans to heal. Otherwise it is difficult, but not impossible for Sam to be killed.
His ability to use the Light is a double-edged sword. On one hand it is a powerful weapon; on the other it could drive him insane. Every time he uses the Light his mind is fragmented and he needs time to piece it back together, during this time he can even forget who he is. The more he uses his ability, the harder it gets for him to recover his wits, eventually it is expected that his mind will be beyond repair. Another side effect is that his irises turn white and they take a while to fade back to their normal, dark colour.
He isn’t able to use spell after spell. Each casting takes up some of his stamina. So if he’s physically exhausted, he’s not going to be able to do much magic. Iron also dampens the strength of his magic.
History:
At around the time when Reial was first colonized there was a man who called himself Time. This man was so powerful that he was said to have been a god. Time experimented with many things and his children were the fruits of his labour. Each of his children had a particular affinity for an element. Those who had an affinity for fire were said to have been able to tame even the wildest infernos, while those with a more subtle affinity over emotions such as love made it possible for even the most hardened, bitter person to love.
However Time, no matter how powerful he was, wasn’t invincible and he feared his enemies and created the Light and placed this power into his favourite child, the only one of his children Time was said to have loved. Everyone rejoiced as they all knew that this child would never use his power for evil, but one of his brothers was jealous of this child and worked with Time’s enemies and killed his brother. Time once more feared his enemies and created a new Bearer of Light. This was Lucifer, a child of Magic. Lucifer grew up oblivious to his heritage as his mother was not one of Time's official wives. In fact, he grew up in the servitude of Jehovah, the son of Time and Belief. However curiosity made him approach Time to ask who his father was. It was then that he learned the truth. After that fateful meeting Time publicly acknowledged Lucifer as his 'necessary child'. This caused great resentment among his siblings as he was the only illegitimate child of Time that was ever acknowledged as a Prince of Heaven and given the weapons and crown and also he was considered necessary while they were clearly not. They thought that Time loved this bastard child and failed to realize that Lucifer was only considered to be a weapon. To avoid sharing the same fate as his predecessor he was made shrewd, cunning and suspicious. Unfortunately Time encouraged those qualities too well and Lucifer rebelled against the idea that he was born to die while destroying Time’s enemies. He sabotaged the Eden Initiative and was banished as punishment.
As time passed, stories told of Time’s children were warped in their retelling and encouraged by those with the power of belief, became religions and myths. Lucifer ended up as the evil, fallen angel to his great annoyance. Since his banishment, he's been pretending to be a normal person. This meant hiding his magical abilities and his weapons. So other than times one of his siblings managed to track him down and try to kill and/or fight him, he's had a fairly uneventful life. However at one point in his life Sam somehow ended up as a leader of a small village up North in the Indoris Mountains. The people who live there are fully aware of who he is and he goes to visit every now and then, even though he has since stepped down from active rule.
Other than that he's dedicated his life to studying anything and everything. He's been visiting the bigger cities to visit their libraries and taking odd jobs here and there to support himself. Sam has spent most of his time in Ivona as much of the knowledge is concentrated there. He's had a few friends who he's told about himself and he's slowly becoming aware how short their lives are in comparison to his. But at the moment he's still able to and wants to reach out to people, even if he does seem a little reserved. Lucifer spends his time keeping a low profile, using various aliases and moving on before people start to realise that he isn’t aging. His most recent job was as a part-time librarian in Melior, but he has recently quit and is looking to do some travelling.
Other:
The term 'Prince of Heaven' is an arbitrary title given to sons of Time. It's a title that holds meaning only to those in Sam's past, as it is a term used to identify Time's legitimate children. It's a sign of acknowledgement from Time himself, that they are related to him and only his direct, legitimate descendants are referred to in this way, illegitimate children or successive generations are never referred to as such. It is one of the major causes of resentment towards Sam by his siblings as he wasn't borne by one of Time's wives. Sam will never seriously call himself that as he thinks the whole thing is rather stupid. Also as it is an arbitrary title, it holds no power in Reial and shouldn't be known to the public other than as an obscure footnote in an equally obscure book. In other words it's a bunch of words strung together to make some people feel special.
