...I have no memories to gain of my mother herself. She disappeared without a trace when I was still an infant. Then...somehow, she ended up in Barhara. But...she knew nothing of her previous life--just her name. A man found her, nursed her back to health, and...and...fell in love with her and married her. She then died about ten years later

Why does everything seem to come back to Alvis? I remember very little about the man himself. Just how much power did he have prior to his coronation, and why does he seem to be the central point to everything that has happened to my family?
At any rate, Alvis never had any royal blood. His position was given to him because my mother was the princess. And for the first decade of my life...my mother was in the capital. And I couldn't see her. Even without the price on my head, if I'd approached the palace...I'd have been nothing more than a stranger to her.
