Background info on your character:James Sunderland is a perfectly normal human being. He laughs, loves, and all the other stuff we do. One day, he fell in love with a woman named Mary and they married. From then on in, Mary was James’ life. He did everything he could with her, because he loved her a lot. But, as with all really interesting stories, the happiness came to an end.
James and Mary made a trip to the resort town of Silent Hill, which would change his life forever. You see, there were several things that happened there, ranging from James getting interested in the town’s bloody past, to the couple spending the whole trip together, loving the place, to the beginning of Mary’s symptoms showing up. You see, after the trip, Mary was diagnosed with a chronic disease, which was left unknown to the players and was disfigured by the disease and the drugs used to fight it. James stayed by her side during this two-year period, despite his growing subconscious anger aimed at Mary and his repressed sex drive. Anywho, skip ahead two years to a little conversation where Mary and James discuss the disease and how Mary’s doing. Although the details aren’t totally revealed, Mary, in a fit of self-loathing, asks James to kill her. James does so, both for his love and his hate of Mary. This act shatters James’ grip on reality and for seven days straight, he mourns for the act of killing her. He probably would have continued this until he died but celestial powers had other ideas for him.
James receives a letter signed Mary, telling him to go to Silent Hill because she’s waiting for him. James, in his sorrow, thinks that Mary was dead for three years and desperate to see her one more time, obliges with little second thought. The highway to town is blocked so he takes a foggy side-road to town.
Once he gets to town, he notices a simple fact; there’s no one there and the fog is all consuming. He happened upon a bloodstain and a mysterious shadow. Being stupid as well as psycho, he pursues the shadow all the way to a bridge underpass. There he finds the radio as well as a monster that looks like a man with a tight plastic bag over his body. Picking up a steel pipe from construction work nearby, he beat the thing to death. During the pipe beatdown, James didn’t notice the scenery change from a very gloomy town to a tropical jail, which was the Island.
Personality wise, James is a generally mopy guy. I mean, his entire world was just shattered when his wife died. He desperately searches for her because he does not know what else to do with his life. However, James is still mildly sociable and will probably ask everyone if they’ve seen Mary. James tries to be helpful whenever he can and worries for people. On top, he’s completely normal. Underneath, however, his mind is a sea of discontent. You see, James repressed the fact he killed Mary very well, replacing him killing her with her dying from the disease. Subconsciously, he feels extreme guilt for killing her and for enjoying killing her and at the same time he hates Mary for holding him back for two years, when he rarely left her side, when he stayed faithful, despite his raging libido. In the game, his guilt, his rage and his sex drive manifests itself as both Maria, is replacement for Mary and Pyramid Head, the god of retribution, which takes on those characteristics of James.
