OM April 2008 - A good day

April 2008 - What does your muse consider a good day?

The one thing Joseph liked a lot about living life on a battlestar was that you always had a good idea what you were going to be doing that day, and when. One thing he sometimes didn't like was that you always had a good idea as to what you were going to be doing, and when, and where, and how and with whom. Even though he might not have been totally officially a member of the Colonial Fleet, he certainly lived like one.

If days didn't change much, then Joseph figured that the way to enjoy them was to make them the very best they could and hope that things went your way.

On one of those best days, Joseph's alarm would go off at 0700 instead of 0600 because there wouldn't be a morning ROTC class session. And the only reason Capt. Chiang ever canceled morning session was because the cadets had a flight rotation that morning, and those always took precedence, and the pre-flight briefings counted as class.

Joseph would get up out of bed, grab his kit and there would only be a few people in the head, so after his shower, he wouldn't have to wait for a sink to shave and brush his teeth. He'd head back to his family's locker and instead of carefully putting on his cadet blues, he'd get to zip up into his jock smock. He didn't care that it was probably fourth- or fifth-hand, it was his now.

On the way to the briefing room on a good day like this, he'd run into Eddie and Marcus, both suited up and heading his way. They'd probably talk about the Triad game the night before, or some old and long-unused corner of the ship they'd stumbled into that was perfect for getting some privacy.

Captain Chiang would lead the briefing, and just because of the way the rotation schedules worked, one of the cadets' Mark II Vipers would be down for maintenance and-- oh, darn-- Joseph would just have to fly a Mark VII for the exercise. The flying part would be the best part, of course. Joseph had been studying Vipers and piloting since he could sit up straight, and he loved it. Sometimes, it was kind of a pain that he'd always been expected to feel like that, but he did love it.

Then, as Battalion Commander, Dragon would let him run the debrief. It'd run quick and efficient. Eddie and Marcus would crack a few jokes, Kacey would have a snarky remark or two, Joseph would have notes for everyone, just to make sure nobody thought he might play favorites.

After flying, his favorite duty rotation would put him in CIC for a few hours, basically playing gopher for the command staff. Then, he'd finally be off duty. From there, Joseph had all kinds of choices to finish off a good day: he could head down to Joe's and shoot pool with Nicky and his deck gang buddies... he could hit the gym and work out, or find a pickup game of Pyramid... better still, he could meet up with Hera and they could go up to the observation deck.

Better than that? They'd find the empty duty locker still empty, and he could leave his boots outside the hatch. A day like that would be pretty much perfect.
