To Whom It May Concern:
We can stop, you know. I don't mean stop running or stop doing what we need to do so the human race can survive. This letter isn't about giving up or surrendering to what (let's face it, a lot of people in the fleet think) might be inevitable. I'm not talking about literally stopping.
But we can stop fooling ourselves.
We're not getting to Earth.
A lot of people really do honestly believe in Earth, especially the ones who were part of the Second Exodus. Gods know that Grandma Laura Roslin believes it, since she's the one who's been setting our course in its direction ever since humanity left the Twelve Colonies. And really, I'm sure that Grandpa Admiral Adama believes it, too, since he's proved time and again what he's willing to sacrifice to get us all there and to keep the Cylons from finding it.
But let's face it-- it's been almost twenty years, and after chasing down clue after clue, following a dozen markers and astronomical signs and fulfilling who knows how many of the prophecies in the Scrolls of Pythia, we don't seem to be any closer to even really knowing where we're going, let alone to actually finding Earth.
I get it. There was a time when the people needed a symbol, a thing to wrap their heads and their hearts around, even something as intangible as a legendary Thirteenth Colony. Our entire world had been destroyed and undone. Everything our race knew and held dear was gone. We had to be going somewhere real, somewhere special, and Earth was that place.
We don't need it anymore. Maybe we'll find a genuinely habitable planet that won't be found by the Cylons. Or maybe the human race will be a nomadic one, constantly sailing the stars, together but without a world. But Earth? It's a fairy tale. It was a good one, and a necessary one, but haven't gotten past that now?
Isn't it time humanity grew up?
Signed,
A concerned human.
