Cat Cord Chewing

Nov 03, 2010 23:05

Darn cat! I had rearranged, re-run, and re-bound all the cables behind the entertainment center when we got FiOS installed, only to find today that Oliver had chewed entirely through two of the power adapter cables, and was halfway through the FiOS router's power cable when I caught him!

Searched Google for solutions and compiled this list, starting with what I think would be most efficacious per dollar (preventative preferably, discouraging secondarily):

* Play with cat!
* Check cat for mouth irritation
* Bind cables in cable wraps/sleeves/tubes (flexible metal/plastic conduit, plastic corrugated tubing, wire-reinforced hose, nylon spiral wrap) (also coat binding)
* Wrap cable in aluminum foil or foil tape from hardware store (prewrap with plastic wrap to not stick permanently)
* Coat cable with bitter/sour/spicy substance from home (cayenne, garlic, lemon, tabasco, soap, hairspray) or from pet store (Bitter Yuck, Bitter Apple, Phooey, NO)
* Wrap cable in plastic citrus sleeve from pet store (ChewSafe, CritterCord)
* Cover / prevent cats access to entire cabled area
