Read the Iraq Study Group Report. It's on the internet for free (pdf). It's poorly written, immensely redundant and does a poor job of defining terms, but it gives a lot of straightforward information about the situation in Iraq. They took 9 months to do this which meant 9 months of more and more money and deaths, but I suppose it's better than there not being a study group report this widely publicized.
If you don't have the time to read it, at least check out the NY Times summary:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/06/world/middleeast/06report_summary.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&oref=slogin Something must be done as soon as possible; the report at times seems hopeful but mostly paints a clear picture: Mr. President, 'victory' -- whatever that means -- is not possible. We need to do the best we can; the consequences of this gross strategic error must be kept to a minimum. Tony Snow quit lying to yourself.
