Morning [AGM: application]

May 14, 2009 14:56

When Jeff wakes up in the morning his hand snaps to life while the rest of his body remains still and unaware of the world around him. He has perfected the art of waking up at exactly 7:00 am to an art. He firmly believes that trick to getting out of bed at the time a person wishes is tricking the body into thinking that it overslept, causing the person to leap into action at double the speed ready to take on the day.

As such, every morning begins with an alarm ringing shrilly at exactly 6:15. This is when the hand rises from its previous place on the mattress to slap against the snooze button, silencing the alarm for five minutes. When the time elapses and the clock rings again it gets a second, more forceful, slap. This cycle continues until 6:50. Jeff face still lies buried nose first into his pillow, but with every sudden burst of sound he is jolted further and further away from his groggy state.

At the ten minutes until 7:00 mark, the hand ceases its slapping in favor of flipping a switch and putting a halt to the beeping for the morning. As he lies there, Jeff peeks open an eye to check the time and mentally processes what he must do to begin the day and be at work by 8:15 to prep for his first class at 8:30. This kids who wanted to take PE at that hour really wanted to be there and generally required little supervision. In the event that he would need an extra 40 minutes of sleep, first period was generally the best hour in which to take it.

There were many things he liked about working at a school. Brats aside there were plenty of days off, the day ended early, and there was practically endless free coffee, coffee which was always the last step into waking up fully. He could always make some at home, but that required effort and unpacking the coffee maker from its box. In Jeff's world, this isn't an issue. If something is free, it's always the best option.
