Now this is a review. Kinda. It's basically a post all about the virtually unknown mangaka (And probably completely unknown to English speakers) Renaissance Yoshida because after I got this book, I had so many FEELINGS.
I scanned tons and tons of pages for this. It's very image heavy!

I was, simply, swayed by the cover. I needed something else aside from Aijin Ichimanyen to fill up my bk1 cart and basically just tossed this in. I'd never heard of this "Renaissance Yoshida" but, weirdly enough, my friend shindehokaii had shared a FMA doujin by her with me a few weeks prior. (In case anyone's interested in said doujin, I've uploaded it here!). Such a, well, grotesque style for BL was so new and strange to me! But I managed to push it out of my mind until

Akane Shinchi Hanaya Sange, translated as "Songs of Self-Abuse" And oh, how appropriate that is.

NOW! The first hurdle was, for me, the biggest. There's no easy way to sugarcoat this, so I'll just come out with it:
EVERY ONE of her characters looks like a crack whore.
..Really?

And YEAH, it's pretty rough. Not only technically, but in how it makes me FEEL. It's almost what I've come to consider The Opposite Of Nakamura-sensei's style. Seriously.
At times her faces remind me of Kawai Hideki's early long-lashed, elegant shotas. The line work feels terribly emotional, like that of Ono Natsume/Basso. However, Basso's work has an unarguable weight to it, while this seems to be a strange mixture of slow and rushed, hesitant and confident. The pen work is thin and scratchy and many times it appears that Yoshida made a mark as a mistake and then just worked over it.
Not sure if that's true obviously, but it SOUNDS HARDCORE, yes? (check out the pattern detail in that couch sex panel. Niiiiice.)
Her tones are AMAZING. They match her style perfectly, simple but rough.
One of the reasons I think I labeled her as "The Opposite of Nakamura Asumiko" so quickly is because it takes her so many lines to complete a single IDEA of something. Check out the eye. See all the little hashmarks? Even in the glasses.
Her anatomy IS a bit grotesque but it pretty boss.
The teeth all look weirdly broken though. But I'm okay with it. It almost makes her style feel more..REAL.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, SHE MAKES ME CARE.
Alot.
I WANT these two to have sexy, sweet kisses where he has to stand on his tiptoes and chores get seriously neglected.
I don't like high school yaoi in general because, well, usually there's just not much there.
But it's DIFFERENT with this! I love that their relationship is so simple, because everything else in SU's life is so..complicated. And grown up.
It's...the little things...
And sometimes she just makes him look like such a..kid. So vulnerable.
And many times she makes him look just PATHETIC.
I mean, she has to be one of the undiscovered queens of pure BL angst.
IF THIS ISN'T ANGST FACE, NOTHING IS.
She even takes something silly and ridiculous and so, SO common in yaoi like school-girl cosplay and makes it..well..
look ridiculous. And silly. And desperate. And when I saw this it literally TUGGED on my heart.
